Ottawa winters are not Toronto winters. We get freeze-thaw cycles 40 to 60 times a year, three months of sub-zero ground temperature, ice damming, road salt thrown across decks by the wind, and at least two ice storms per decade that load every horizontal surface with a half-inch glaze.
An outdoor living space designed for Vancouver gets eaten alive here. We have done more than 80 deck and outdoor builds in Ottawa over the last twenty years and the failure modes are predictable. So is what works.
This article is not theory. It is what we have seen on the ground in Westboro, Manotick, Kanata, Findlay Creek, and everywhere in between. Composite vs cedar. Fire features that pass winter. Four-season sunrooms that earn their cost. And the things people pay for that fall apart in five years.
Decking: composite vs cedar, the real comparison
Cedar has been the default Ottawa deck material for forty years. It is local, it smells right, it weathers to a silver patina, and it costs roughly half of composite. It also fails in three predictable ways here:
- Cupping after 3 winters: the freeze-thaw cycle pulls moisture in and out of the boards. Surface boards cup upward and the deck becomes uneven underfoot
- End-grain rot at fasteners: water sits at the cut ends. Even pre-stained cedar with end-cut sealer typically shows soft rot at fastener holes by year 6 or 7
- Refinishing every 2 to 3 years: if you want it to keep its colour, you are sanding and re-staining every other summer. That is recurring material and labour cost plus several weekends of your time, year after year
Composite (Trex Transcend, TimberTech Advanced PVC, or comparable capped composite) costs noticeably more per linear foot than cedar at the supply level. The installed difference depends on board profile, joist spacing, and railing selection, which is why we quote both options side by side in a written breakdown.
The honest comparison happens at the 12-year mark, not on day one:
- Cedar deck: lower up-front installed cost, then four refinishing cycles in materials and labour over twelve years
- Capped composite: higher up-front installed cost, then zero refinishing for the life of the boards
Once you add the refinishing cycles, the lifetime cost of a cedar deck closes most of the gap and often passes it, especially if you value your own weekends. Composite also looks the same in year 12 as it did at install. We lay both numbers out so the choice is a value decision, not a guess.
The composite vs cedar debate is not really about cost. It is about whether you want to spend three weekends every other summer maintaining your deck or whether you want to use it.
Composite is not all the same
Capped composite is not capped composite is not capped composite. There is real engineering difference between brands and tiers, and the bargain stuff fails the same way cedar does.
What we will install:
- Trex Transcend or Trex Signature lines (Trex Enhance is their entry tier and we have seen colour fade by year 4 here)
- TimberTech Advanced PVC (the AZEK polymer line, not their composite line). PVC handles freeze-thaw better than even capped composite because there is no wood flour in the core
- Fiberon Concordia or Sanctuary lines
What we will not install: any uncapped composite, any first-generation composite, any board that does not carry a 25-year stain and fade warranty in writing.
The hidden detail that kills decks
The substructure matters as much as the deck boards. Pressure-treated joists at 16-inch on-centre with joist tape on every top edge will outlast the deck above. Skip the joist tape and water sits in every screw hole, rotting the joist from the top down. Joist tape is a trivial material line on the estimate. Skipping it costs you the whole deck at year 14.
Fire features that survive Ottawa winters
Built-in fire features are the second-most-requested item in outdoor renovations after the deck itself. They also fail more than any other element if specified wrong.
What works in Ottawa:
- Natural gas fire pit, plumbed in: the priciest of the three, driven by size, the surround material, and the gas line run. No firewood, no smoke complaints, on-off in seconds. Pick a model with a stainless steel burner ring and a glass guard. The cheap aluminum burners crack at year 3
- Wood-burning fire pit, masonry-built: a mid-to-higher investment when done right, with a proper concrete footing below frost line, firebrick interior, and a granite or steel cap. The footing is what matters. A masonry pit on a 6-inch concrete pad cracks the first winter
- Steel fire bowl, freestanding: the lowest-cost option by a wide margin. Move it indoors for winter. Easy. The freestanding option is honestly fine for most clients and we tell them so
What fails: poured-concrete decorative fire bowls (crack), low-end stamped-metal fire pits (rust through by year 4), gas pits installed without a proper drainage rock layer below the burner (water freezes and breaks the manifold).
Four-season sunrooms: when they work, when they do not
A real four-season sunroom is a Part 9 building under the Ontario Building Code. It needs proper foundation, insulated walls, code-compliant glazing, dedicated heat, and electrical to code. It is essentially a permitted addition.
Because it is effectively a permitted addition, a four-season sunroom is one of the larger outdoor investments in Ottawa. What moves the number is size, glazing performance, foundation type, heating choice, and interior finish level. A fibre-cement and triple-glazed room with a heat pump and engineered floor sits well above a basic enclosure, which is why we scope it as a full addition with an itemized written proposal rather than a per-foot guess.
What does not work: the prefab "sunroom kits" that get sold by the truck-load every spring. They are usually three-season at best, the glass is single-pane sealed units that fog by year 5, and the framing is aluminum extrusions that condense moisture every winter. We have demolished four of them in the last decade. Nobody calls us when they install them. They call when the seals fail.
If your budget supports a full addition, build a real four-season space. If it does not, build an open or screened porch under a gabled roof and use it three seasons a year. Do not pour money into a prefab in-between solution that delivers neither.
Hardscape and landscape: the unsung lifespan question
Patios, walkways, retaining walls, and edging all have very different lifespans here:
- Concrete pavers (Techo-Bloc, Permacon): 30+ years if installed on a proper compacted base with polymeric sand joints. Mid-range cost per square foot installed
- Poured concrete patio: 15 to 25 years if poured at minimum 4 inches with rebar mat and proper expansion joints. Will crack at the joints and that is fine. The most economical of the durable options
- Natural flagstone on a proper base: 40+ years. The premium option, with cost driven by stone selection
- Loose flagstone on sand: 5 to 10 years before the heaving makes it unwalkable. We do not install this
- Wood retaining walls (pressure-treated): 12 to 18 years depending on drainage. The cheap option that almost always disappoints
- Engineered block retaining walls (Allan Block, Roman Wall): 50+ years if drainage and geogrid are done right. Cost per linear foot scales with wall height and the drainage detailing behind it
The 5-year failure list
Things we routinely tear out and replace because they failed in a typical 5-year window in Ottawa:
- Uncapped composite decking from 2018-2020
- Pressure-treated stairs without proper hangers and end-grain seal
- Aluminum-framed pergola kits (loosen at every joint after winter heave)
- Drop-in concrete fire bowls without a real footing
- Outdoor speakers and TVs not rated for sub-zero (cycle them out for winter or buy spec'd-for-cold gear)
- Low-voltage path lighting on cheap aluminum fixtures (the fixture body fatigues, not the LED)
- Sealed-unit windows in prefab sunrooms (5-7 year fog horizon is typical)
The takeaway
Ottawa is a hard climate. The outdoor space that lasts 20 years here is not the most expensive one. It is the one designed for the actual climate, with the right substrate, the right materials, and the right details at the connections. Cheap is almost always more expensive in 7 years.
Spend on what will be in the ground or in the structure: foundation, footings, joist tape, polymeric sand, drainage. Save on the items you can swap easily later: furniture, fire bowls, planters, lighting fixtures.
