A pegboard is the most efficient way to organize tools, garage equipment, or hobby supplies on a wall. The trick that makes it work — and the one most DIY installers miss — is mounting it with a 1/2-inch standoff from the wall. Without that gap, the hooks can't engage the holes from behind, and the pegboard becomes a flat board with decorative perforations.

This guide covers a standard 4×8 hardboard pegboard panel mounted to a wall over drywall or directly to studs. Heavier-duty steel pegboards and modular wall-storage systems use similar principles with their own mounting hardware.

Before you start

Three things to settle:

1. The 1/2-inch standoff is mandatory. Pegboard hooks insert through the front holes and bend back to grip the wall side. Without a gap behind the panel, the hooks can't bend back and won't engage. Use 1/2-inch wood furring strips or pegboard standoff spacers to create the gap.

2. Pegboard weight rating. Standard 1/4-inch hardboard pegboard handles up to 50 lbs of distributed load (a few hand tools per hook, evenly across the panel). 1/8-inch pegboard is lightweight and tears under heavy hooks. Steel pegboard handles 100+ lbs. Pick based on what you'll hang.

3. Find studs for direct fastening. Pegboard mounted to studs is far stronger than pegboard mounted to drywall anchors. The panel's mounting screws should hit at least 2 studs, ideally 4 — one per corner of a 4×8 panel.

  • #8 × 2-1/2 inch wood screws (for pegboard to studs)
  • Snaptoggles or self-drilling threaded anchors (for non-stud mounting points)
  • Pegboard hooks and bins (per your needs)
  • Optional: paint and primer for finished look

Buy hooks at the same time as the pegboard

Hook designs vary — some hooks fit only specific hole sizes (1/8 vs 1/4 vs 9/32 inch) and some pegboard styles use proprietary hooks. Buy a hook starter kit from the same brand and pattern as your pegboard to ensure compatibility.

Stock hooks for hardboard pegboard come in single-prong (light tools), double-prong (longer tools), bin holders, and shelf brackets. A 50-piece variety pack covers most household tool storage needs.

Step-by-step instructions

Cut pegboard to size

Most pegboards come in 4×8 sheets. For a smaller install, cut the panel to size with a circular saw or jigsaw. Cut from the back side to prevent chipping the front face.

Sand cut edges smooth with 120-grit sandpaper to prevent splinters when handling.

Plan the panel layout on the wall

Decide where the pegboard will go on the wall. Standard heights: bottom edge 36 to 42 inches above the floor in a workshop (waist-high tools accessible easily), or top edge near 7 feet for floor-to-ceiling installations.

Mark the panel's intended position with painter's tape on the wall — corners and centre. Stand back and verify the position works before drilling.

Find studs in the install zone

Sweep the wall with a stud finder. Mark stud locations with vertical lines extending past the planned panel position.

Plan to hit at least 2 studs (top and bottom of one side) for a small panel, 4 studs (corners) for a 4×8 panel.

Cut and install furring strips for the standoff

Cut 1×2 furring strips to match the panel's height. You'll need a strip on each side and one in the centre for support on a 4×8 panel.

Mount the furring strips to the wall — into studs where possible — using #8 × 2-1/2 inch wood screws. The strips should sit flat against the wall and protrude 1/2 to 3/4 inch outward.

Verify all furring strips are level and at the same depth from the wall.

Hold the pegboard against the furring strips

With your helper, lift the pegboard panel and press it against the furring strips. Verify the panel sits flat — no gaps between the panel back and any strip.

Mark the screw locations through the pegboard onto the furring strips below.

Pre-drill and screw the panel to the strips

Pre-drill holes through the pegboard at each marked location with a 1/8-inch bit. Pre-drilling prevents the pegboard from cracking when the screw drives in.

Drive #8 × 1-1/4 inch wood screws through the pegboard into the furring strips. Use finishing washers if you want the screw heads to look polished.

Screw at each corner, the centre of each side, and the centre of the panel — typically 8 to 10 screws total for a 4×8 panel.

Verify the hooks work

Insert a few hooks through the panel's holes. Each hook should slide in, drop down, and engage the back of the panel. The 1/2-inch standoff lets the hook's back bend behind the panel without touching the wall.

If hooks don't engage, the standoff isn't deep enough — add another layer of furring or use thicker standoff spacers.

Paint or finish (optional)

For a finished look, paint the pegboard before installing tools. Use latex paint with a foam roller for a smooth finish. Multiple thin coats work better than one thick coat to avoid drips through the holes.

Some installers skip painting and use raw hardboard for a workshop-utility look. Either works.

Organize tools by frequency of use

Hang tools at heights matching their frequency: most-used at chest level (60 inches), occasionally-used near the top (72-84 inches), heavy or rarely-used at the bottom (36-48 inches).

Use bins and small containers for fasteners, hardware, and consumables. Trace tool outlines on the pegboard with a marker so you can see at a glance what's missing — a workshop discipline that prevents lost tools.

Pro tip: use small dabs of museum putty under hooks to prevent them from working out over years of tool removal/replacement. Without it, frequently-used hooks gradually walk forward through the holes.

How big a pegboard do I need?

A 4×4 panel (16 sq ft) holds 30 to 50 tools comfortably. A 4×8 panel (32 sq ft) handles a full home workshop's worth of hand tools. Calculate based on what you currently store and add 50% growth room.

Can I install pegboard in a basement?

Yes — basements are common locations. If the wall is exterior concrete with potential moisture, install furring strips with rigid foam between concrete and pegboard, OR mount the pegboard to interior framing rather than directly to a foundation wall.

What's the weight limit for pegboard hooks?

Standard hardboard pegboard hooks support 5 to 15 lbs each, depending on the hook design and the panel material. Steel pegboard hooks support 25+ lbs each.

Distributed load is more important than per-hook rating. A 4×4 panel of 1/4-inch hardboard mounted to studs handles 50 lbs of total distributed weight. Steel handles 200+.

Can I cut pegboard to a custom shape?

Yes — cut with a circular saw, jigsaw, or even a sharp utility knife (score and snap, multiple passes). Cut from the back side to minimize chipping on the visible face. Sand cut edges smooth.
