Before you start
Three things to settle:
1. Match crown style to cabinet. Crown moulding profile and finish should match cabinet doors and faces. Painted cabinets: paint-grade MDF or pine crown. Stained cabinets: matching wood crown (oak, maple, cherry). Mismatched profiles or finishes look like an afterthought.
2. Compound mitre saw mandatory. Crown moulding cuts are compound angles (the moulding spans wall and ceiling at an angle). A standard mitre saw won't work without crown moulding cutting jigs. Use a sliding compound mitre saw with crown moulding stop or sled.
3. Crown to cabinet only, not to ceiling. Crown attaches to the cabinet top, not the ceiling. Ceiling can be slightly out of level — crown floats below it. Don't try to anchor crown to ceiling — defeats the purpose and shows alignment issues.

Cope inside corners; mitre outside corners
Inside corners: cope joint (one piece runs to wall, second is profile-cut to fit against first). Tight under wood movement.
Outside corners: 45° mitre, glued.
Same principles as baseboard cope/mitre.
Step-by-step instructions
Plan crown layout
Measure cabinet runs. Note each corner: inside, outside, or to wall.
Sketch the layout.
Identify long runs needing scarf joints (where two pieces of crown meet end-to-end).
Set saw for compound crown cuts
Sliding compound mitre saw.
For nested crown (crown lying flat on saw): use crown moulding stop.
For crown standing upright (45° saw setting + 30° bevel for typical 38° crown): adjust saw per crown's spring angle.
Practice on scrap before final cuts.
Cut first piece (full-length to wall)
First piece: square cut at one end (against wall), mitre cut at other end (toward outside corner) or coped (toward inside corner).
Length: from end wall to corner, allowing for cope or mitre.
Test fit before final install.
Inside corner: cope second piece
Second piece: cut 45° angle at the end facing the corner.
With coping saw: cut along the profile.
Resulting end matches the contour of the first piece's profile.
Test fit — cope tucks tight against first piece.
Outside corner: mitre both pieces
Both pieces 45° (or compensated for non-square corner).
Glue mitred faces with wood glue.
Hold pieces in position and brad nail.
Position and nail crown
Crown rests against the cabinet top edge AND against the ceiling — at its spring angle.
Nail through the bottom edge of crown into the cabinet top edge.
Brad nailer with 1.5-2 inch nails.
Don't nail to ceiling — only to cabinets.
Long runs: scarf joint
If wall is longer than crown stock: scarf joint (45° cut at both ends, glued).
Locate scarf joint over a cabinet face (not in middle of open space).
Glue and brad nail.
Fill nail holes
Wood filler in nail holes.
Sand smooth.
Match colour for stained crown (or paint over for painted).
Caulk seams
Caulk where crown meets ceiling (small gaps disappear with caulk).
Caulk corner joints.
Paintable latex caulk for painted crown.
Don't caulk where crown meets cabinet — those joints should be tight.
Touch up paint or stain
Brush touch-up over fillers and caulk.
Match brand and colour.
Multiple thin coats.
Common mistakes that cost you
- Trying with non-compound mitre saw. Crown cuts are compound. Sliding compound mitre or jig required.
- Mitring inside corners. Opens up over time. Cope inside corners.
- Anchoring to ceiling. Defeats the float; ceiling movement causes crown to crack. Anchor only to cabinet.
- Wrong profile for cabinet style. Mismatched crown looks added-on. Match cabinet detail.
- Skipping scarf joints over cabinets. Scarf joints in open spaces look obvious. Locate over face frame.
