New cabinet knobs are the cheapest visible kitchen upgrade. A simple hardware swap (knobs and pulls across a whole kitchen) reads like a much bigger renovation. The job is straightforward — drill a hole, screw in the knob — but two specific mistakes are responsible for almost every botched install: drilling without a template (every knob ends up in a slightly different place) and drilling without proper backing (the cabinet door splits at the back where the bit punches through).
This guide covers a standard knob and pull install on stained, painted, or laminate cabinet doors and drawer fronts. The method works for shaker, slab, and raised-panel doors equally.
Before you start
Three things to settle:
1. Knob placement standards. On door panels (the larger surface): centre the knob 2-1/2 to 3 inches from the corner, on the side opposite the hinge. On drawer fronts: centre vertically and horizontally on each drawer face. Some shaker-style designs offset knobs 1-1/2 inch from the inner panel edge for a more refined look. Pick a placement and use it consistently across all cabinets — varying placement reads as amateur.
2. Make a template. Drilling 25 holes by eyeballed measurements produces 25 slightly-different placements. A simple cardboard or plastic template with the hole pre-positioned eliminates measurement error. Many big-box stores sell inexpensive pre-made cabinet hardware templates that adjust to standard knob spacings.
3. Pull spacing for handles. Pulls (handles) come with set hole spacing — common standards are 3 inch, 96 mm (3.78"), 5 inch, and 128 mm. Buy pulls that match your existing holes if updating, or commit to filling old holes and drilling new. Don't try to install pulls into mismatched holes — even 1/8 inch off looks wrong.

Sacrifice scrap on the inside to prevent splitting
When the drill bit punches through the back of a cabinet door, the wood splinters out — sometimes badly. The fix: clamp a piece of scrap plywood against the back of the door at the drilling spot. The bit drills through the door and into the scrap, with no splintering on either piece.
Without the scrap backing, expect 3 to 5 of every 25 doors to split when the bit exits — a visible defect on the cabinet's inside that's irreversible.
Step-by-step instructions
Pick the placement standard for your kitchen
Decide before you start: where does each knob and pull go on every cabinet face?
Standard placement on doors: 2-1/2 to 3 inches from the corner, opposite the hinge side. On uppers, lower corner. On lowers, upper corner. The knob ends up at hand reach.
Standard placement on drawers: centred horizontally and vertically on the face. For wide drawers (over 24 inches), use two knobs at quarter points or a single pull centred.
Make or buy a template
Cut a piece of cardboard or stiff paper to match your standard placement offset. Mark the knob hole position on the template. Place the template in the corner of each door and mark through it.
Or use a commercial template (Kreg, Liberty Hardware) that adjusts to standard placements — these have built-in stops for corner registration and pre-drilled holes for various offsets.
The template ensures every knob is in the same position relative to its corner. Without a template, errors compound across 25 cabinets.
Mark each knob position
Working through the kitchen one cabinet at a time, place the template in the proper corner and mark the knob hole with a sharp pencil. Press hard enough to leave a clear pencil dot through the template.
Verify the marks before drilling — count cabinets, measure a sample to confirm positions are consistent.
Set up the drill with the right bit and stop block
Use a 3/16-inch bit for typical #8 cabinet knob screws (verify against your specific knob's screw size).
If your drill has a depth stop, set it to drill just past the cabinet door thickness — typically 3/4 to 1 inch. Drilling deeper than necessary risks hitting things behind the door.
Check the bit is sharp — dull bits tear instead of cut, leaving rough hole edges.
Clamp a backer scrap behind each door
Open the cabinet door. Hold or clamp a piece of scrap plywood against the inside surface of the door at the drilling location.
The scrap absorbs the bit's exit force — the door drills cleanly with no splintering on the inside. Without the scrap, the inner face of the cabinet door splinters out.
Move the scrap to each door as you progress through the kitchen.
Drill the knob hole
Hold the drill perpendicular to the door face. Drill straight through the door, with the bit exiting into the scrap behind.
Lift the bit out without changing angle. Switch to the next door.
Mount the knob
Insert the knob's mounting screw from the back side of the door, threading it through the hole. The screw extends through the door front by enough to engage the knob's threaded hole.
Thread the knob onto the screw from the front, hand-tighten until snug.
If the screw is too long for the knob, the knob won't seat against the door — switch to a shorter screw or use a screw extender (some hardware kits include both).
For pulls (handles): drill two holes per pull
Pulls have a fixed hole spacing — verify the spec before drilling.
Mark both holes using a template that includes both screw positions. Drill both holes the same way as knob holes, with backing scrap.
Mount the pull from the front with the included screws.
Verify alignment after install
Step back from the kitchen. Walk through the room and look at the knob/pull placement across all cabinets.
Variations of more than 1/8 inch are visible. Fix any outliers by removing the knob, filling the hole with wood filler, and re-drilling at the correct position.
Wood filler works on stained or painted cabinets — match the colour by mixing tinted filler or by painting over.
Common mistakes that cost you
- No template. Eyeballed measurements across 25 cabinets produce 25 slightly-different positions. A simple template eliminates the variance.
- No backer scrap. Drill bit splinters the inside of the door on exit. Always clamp scrap plywood behind the drilling location.
- Wrong screw length. Too short and the knob can't seat. Too long and the screw protrudes past the knob. Match the screw to the door thickness.
- Drilling at an angle. Angled holes mean the knob sits crooked. Hold the drill perpendicular and drill straight through.
- Not verifying after install. Step back from the kitchen and look — variations are visible only at distance. Fix outliers before they become permanent.
- Mismatched pulls and existing holes. If you're updating from old pulls, the hole spacing must match. Even 1/8 inch off looks wrong. Buy pulls matching existing holes, or fill and re-drill.

How do I drill into laminate cabinets without chipping?
Apply painter's tape over the drill point on both sides of the door. Drill through the tape; the tape supports the laminate edges and prevents chipping.
Use a sharp bit at low speed with light pressure. Aggressive drilling shatters laminate. Let the bit do the work.
