How to Install a Curtain Rod Properly

A curtain rod is one of the smallest things you install in a home, and one of the most commonly done badly. Almost every Ottawa home we walk through has at least one window with a rod that's tilting, sagging, or two screw holes from coming off the wall — usually because it was installed in five minutes with whatever screws came in the box.

Done right, a curtain rod takes 20 to 45 minutes for a single window and lasts the life of the house. Done wrong, the bracket pulls free of the drywall the first time someone yanks the curtains shut, and now you're patching holes too.

This guide covers the entire job: figuring out the height and width before you drill, picking the right anchor for the curtains you actually own, locating studs, and the small detail steps that separate a five-minute job from a five-year job.

Before you start: three things to figure out

The job goes in a different order depending on three answers. Knowing them up front means you only buy hardware once and only drill holes once.

1. What's behind your wall. Standard drywall is hollow except where wood studs run vertically every 16 or 24 inches. Plaster on wood lath (common in Ottawa homes built before 1960) is denser but cracks if you drill it wrong — and it needs different anchors. Brick, stone, or tile around the window opening means masonry hardware, not drywall hardware.

2. How heavy your curtains are. Sheer panels are 1 to 3 lbs total. Lined drapes are 8 to 15 lbs. Heavy blackout curtains with metal grommets and a thick lining can hit 20 to 25 lbs once they're hanging. The anchor's weight rating must match the load with at least 30 percent margin, and that's per anchor — the rod has at least four screws total, but you size to the worst-case bracket carrying half the rod.

3. Where the rod sits. The "high and wide" rule makes the window look bigger and lets light in fully when curtains are open: 4 to 6 inches above the window frame, and 4 to 8 inches outside it on each side. For a more dramatic floor-to-ceiling look, mount 1 to 2 inches below the ceiling instead. Curtains should kiss the floor or puddle slightly — never float two inches above it.

Skip the hardware that came in the box

The screws and plastic anchors that ship with most curtain rods are sized for the lightest possible curtain. They're 1-inch screws with cone-shaped expansion anchors that crush drywall and pull free under load. Even if you're hanging sheers, replace them with proper hardware. It is inexpensive at any Ottawa Home Depot, Lowe's, or Home Hardware, and the install will outlast the wall paint.

Step-by-step instructions

Plan the height and the rod length first

Stand back from the window with the tape measure and decide two numbers before you touch a tool. Height: measure from the top of the window casing up to where the bracket centerline will sit. For most rooms, 4 to 6 inches above the casing is the sweet spot. If your ceilings are 9 ft or higher and you want the dramatic look, aim for 1 to 2 inches below the ceiling line instead and pick a longer curtain to match.

Rod length: measure the window's outside-trim width, then add 8 to 16 inches total (4 to 8 inches per side). The extra width is what makes a window look bigger when curtains are pulled fully open — the curtain stacks past the glass instead of covering it.

Write both numbers down. You'll reference them three more times.

Confirm your wall type and pick the right anchor

Knock on the wall with a knuckle. Standard drywall sounds hollow with a slightly muffled tap. Plaster on lath sounds tighter, almost like a hardwood door. Brick or tile is solid and cold to the touch.

Match the anchor to the wall and the curtain weight:

If you have studs in the right spot (Step 4 confirms this), you don't need anchors at all on those screws — wood screws driven directly into the framing are stronger than any anchor.

Mark the bracket centerline on the wall

Hold the tape measure vertically against the window frame. Measure up the height you decided in Step 1 and mark the wall lightly with a pencil at the bracket's intended center. Repeat on the other side of the window for the second bracket. Both marks should be identical heights from the floor — double-check by measuring up from the floor at both points.

If you're working on a dark or textured wall where pencil doesn't show, lay a strip of painter's tape across the install area and mark on the tape instead. The tape pulls off cleanly when you're done and leaves no residue.

Pro tip: measure from the window frame, not from the ceiling. Ceilings in older Ottawa homes are rarely level, and a rod measured from the ceiling will look like it's sloping the same way the ceiling does.

Find the studs in the bracket zone

Calibrate your stud finder against a section of bare wall away from the window (most electronic stud finders need a starting point with no stud underneath). Then sweep horizontally through the area where the bracket will land.

When the stud finder triggers, mark the edge with a pencil. Sweep again from the other direction to find the opposite edge. Studs are 1.5 inches wide on the face — the center is what you want for the screw, so put your X mark halfway between the two edges.

In most Ottawa homes, the window opening itself is framed with solid lumber: a king stud on each side of the rough opening, plus jack studs supporting the header. Those studs sit just outside the window casing on each side — usually within 1 to 2 inches of where your bracket lands. That's a gift; use it.

If the stud finder is unreliable (common on plaster walls with metal mesh): drill a 1/16-inch test hole at your mark. The bit either bites into wood (drag, light tan dust) or punches through into hollow space (sudden give). It leaves a hole the size of a pin that fills invisibly with a swipe of paint touch-up.

Decide your mounting strategy for each bracket

Now you know what's behind each bracket location. Pick the strategy per side:

If a bracket has two screw holes, ideally at least one screw goes into a stud and the other gets a snaptoggle. Mixed mounting is fine and common.

Hold the bracket up and level it

Press the bracket flat against the wall at your marked center. Lay the torpedo level on the top edge of the bracket (or whichever flat surface the bracket gives you). Slide the bracket up or down a millimetre at a time until the bubble sits dead-center between the lines.

Holding the bracket and level steady with one hand, mark each screw hole through the bracket with the pencil. Press hard enough to leave a clear pencil dot through each hole.

Step back two feet and look at the marks against the ceiling and the top of the window casing. If anything looks visually off, trust your eye over the level — older Ottawa homes settle, and a "level" bracket can still look crooked relative to a sagging window frame above it. Adjust if needed.

Drill the pilot holes

Bit size depends on what you're drilling into:

Drill perpendicular to the wall, not at an angle. An angled hole means the screw seats crooked and the bracket rotates under load. Have a vacuum hose or a rolled-up paper towel under the hole to catch dust before it hits the baseboard.

Install the anchor (if your screw doesn't go into a stud)

For a snaptoggle: fold the metal channel against the strap, push it through the hole, then pull the plastic strap back toward you so the channel sits flat against the back side of the drywall. Slide the plastic locking cap along the strap until it snaps flush against the wall surface. Snap or cut off the excess strap. Now you have a metal channel locked behind the drywall with a hole in the cap waiting for the screw.

For a self-drilling threaded anchor: hand-screw it in like a regular screw using a Phillips driver. Stop when the head sits flush against the wall. Don't over-drive — the threads strip if you go past flush.

Both anchor types should sit completely flush, no part of the anchor proud of the wall. A proud anchor means the bracket can't sit flat against the wall.

Drive the bracket screws

Set your drill clutch to a medium-low setting (around 6 to 8 on most cordless drills). Hold the bracket against the wall, lined up with the anchor or stud holes. Drive each screw slowly until the bracket sits firmly against the wall and the screw head is flush with the bracket.

Stop when the bracket is snug. Two more turns past snug strips the anchor or splits the wood. Over-driven screws are the single most common cause of curtain rod failure: they look fine for a week, then the anchor lets go all at once.

Test by gripping the bracket and tugging firmly downward. It should not move at all, not even a millimetre. If it shifts, the anchor is stripped — back the screw out, fill the hole, and try again 1 inch over with a fresh anchor.

Mount the second bracket using the rod itself for alignment

This step is the difference between a level rod and a rod that "looks level on the bracket but tilts when you slide the curtains across it." Don't trust the bracket geometry alone — use the rod.

Slide the actual curtain rod into the first installed bracket so it's loose but supported. Hold the second bracket up at the opposite end of the rod, sliding the rod into it. Now lay the level on top of the rod itself (not the bracket). Adjust the second bracket up or down until the bubble sits centered.

This compensates for any slight warp in the rod, any tilt in the first bracket, and any wonkiness in the wall. Mark the second bracket's screw holes through the bracket while holding the rod level. Then remove the rod and the second bracket, drill, and repeat steps 7 to 9 for that side.

Add a center support bracket if the rod is over 48 inches

Mid-span sag is the number-one reason curtain rods look bad after a year. A 6-foot rod with two end brackets and 15 lbs of curtains will visibly bow in the middle within months. The fix is a center bracket that shares the load.

Hang the rod loosely in both end brackets. Find the rod's midpoint with a tape measure. Drop a level off the rod at that midpoint to find the wall directly below the center, and mark a point at the same height as the end brackets. Repeat the stud-find / anchor-pick / level / mount sequence for that single bracket. Most curtain rod kits include a third bracket for this purpose — if yours doesn't, the curtain rod manufacturer sells matching center brackets separately.

Center brackets must accept the rod from the side (open-front style), not require you to thread the rod through them end-on. Otherwise, you can't install one mid-span without dismounting an end bracket. Read the package before you buy.

Hang one panel and stress-test before adding the rest

Slide one curtain panel onto the rod. Push it across the full length of the rod and back. Watch the brackets — do they shift, creak, or rotate? If yes, that bracket isn't fully seated and needs to come back down.

Then add the second panel and any decorative finials. Step back from the room, look at the rod across the entire window, and check that:

If everything passes, you're done. If something looks off, fix it before the curtains have been pulled a hundred times and worked the bracket loose.

Common mistakes that cost you

Frequently asked questions

What if I don't have a stud finder?

Two reliable backup methods: First, drill a small 1/16-inch test hole at your bracket mark. If the bit drags and produces light tan wood dust, you're in a stud. If it punches through into hollow space with no resistance, you're in drywall — use an anchor. The pinhole disappears with a dot of paint.

Second, look at where the wall meets the ceiling. Drywall screws or nail pops show up as small circular bumps along stud lines, especially in raking light. They're spaced 16 inches apart on most modern walls, 24 inches on some older builds. Once you find one, the next stud is 16 inches over.

How heavy is too heavy for drywall anchors?

A pair of properly installed snaptoggle bolts (Toggler brand, 1/4-20 size) holds about 60 to 80 lbs in standard 1/2-inch drywall. A typical curtain rod with two anchored brackets has four anchor points and can support 200 lbs of static load if every anchor is properly seated.

The real-world limit isn't the anchor — it's how the load is applied. Yanking heavy curtains shut creates short bursts of force higher than the static weight, which is why rated capacity always includes a safety margin. As a rule, if your total curtain weight exceeds 25 lbs per panel, find at least one stud per bracket and don't rely on anchors alone.

How do I install a curtain rod on plaster walls?

Plaster on wood lath needs the same anchor concept as drywall but with three differences. Use a sharp masonry-tipped bit (not a wood bit), drill at low speed with light pressure to avoid cracking the plaster surface, and apply a small piece of painter's tape over your drill point first — the tape gives the bit something to bite into and reduces surface chipping.

Snaptoggles work well in plaster as long as the lath behind it is intact. If the bit punches through what feels like dust (deteriorated plaster), the wall needs repair before any rod goes up. That's a different job — call us.

Can I use my electric drill on hammer mode?

No, not on drywall or plaster. Hammer mode is for masonry — brick, concrete, stone — and it pulses the bit forward as it spins. On drywall it shatters the gypsum core and creates a hole much wider than the bit. On plaster it will crack the surface around the hole. Switch your drill to standard rotation mode (the drill icon, not the hammer icon) before drilling into any wall except masonry.

What if a stud isn't in a useful spot for my bracket?

Drywall snaptoggles are strong enough that you don't need a stud. A pair of properly installed snaptoggles per bracket holds heavy curtains without issue. Stud finds are nice when they happen but not required.

If you really want stud support but the studs don't line up, the workaround is a wider rod that extends the brackets out to where the studs do sit. That's the "high and wide" rule paying its second dividend — the same rod length that makes the window look bigger usually puts brackets directly over the framing studs flanking the window opening.

Should I use the screws that came in the box?

Probably not. Most curtain rod kits ship with 1-inch screws and the cheap cone-shaped plastic anchors. The screws are too short to bite a stud properly, and the plastic anchors are rated for almost nothing. Replace both with #8 × 2-inch wood screws (for studs) and snaptoggle bolts (for drywall-only). The proper hardware is inexpensive at any Ottawa Home Depot, Lowe's, or Home Hardware, and the install will outlast the wall paint.

How do I install a ceiling-mounted curtain rod?

Ceiling-mounted curtain rods are common in floor-to-ceiling installations. Same principles, plus one new variable: ceiling joists run perpendicular to the floor joists below, usually 16 or 24 inches on center. Find the joist lines with a stud finder — ceilings have less material above the drywall, so cheap finders sometimes work better there.

If the rod runs perpendicular to joists, you'll cross at least one joist per bracket. If it runs parallel, you might be entirely between joists — in that case use heavy-duty toggle bolts rated for ceiling installation, never lightweight anchors. Curtains pulling sideways on a ceiling-mounted rod create lateral force that small anchors can't take.

When to call us instead

Some installs aren't a DIY job. If the wall is plaster on lath that's deteriorating, or brick around the window opening, or tile in a bathroom — drywall hardware is the wrong system entirely. Same goes for ceiling-mounted rods over 8 feet long, motorized curtain systems with electrical, or any install where the wall has hidden plumbing or wiring you don't want to drill through.
