Before you start
Three things to settle:
1. Match valve type and size. Most toilet supplies are 1/2 inch copper pipe with 3/8 inch outlet to toilet. Verify yours by checking existing valve. Quarter-turn ball valve is the modern standard — replaces older compression valves.
2. Compression fitting on copper. Most existing valves use compression fittings (compression nut + ferrule slides on pipe, tightens to seal). New valves typically come with new compression nut and ferrule. The pipe end shouldn't need cutting if existing was installed cleanly.
3. Shut off main water before working. Even if the existing valve appears closed, you can't trust it (that's why you're replacing). Shut off the main water supply or whole-house valve before any work.

Replace the supply line at the same time
Toilet supply lines (the flex hose between valve and toilet) are inexpensive and degrade over years.
Replacing the valve is a perfect time to also replace the supply line.
Stainless braided supply lines are more reliable than older plastic.
Step-by-step instructions
Shut off main water and drain toilet
Whole-house water shutoff (typically near where supply enters the home).
Flush toilet to drain tank.
Sponge out any remaining water in tank to prevent spill.
Disconnect existing supply line at toilet
Loosen compression nut at toilet's tank with adjustable wrench.
Disconnect supply line from toilet.
Bucket under valve to catch residual water.
Remove existing valve
Compression valve: loosen compression nut at the pipe with adjustable wrench (counter-clockwise from valve side).
Valve slides off pipe.
Old compression nut and ferrule may remain on pipe — pry off carefully or cut pipe just past them.
Inspect and clean the pipe end
Pipe end should be clean, smooth.
Sand lightly with emery cloth to remove old solder or oxidation.
Wipe clean.
Install new compression valve
Slide new compression nut onto pipe (threaded end facing the valve).
Slide new ferrule onto pipe behind nut.
Push new valve onto pipe end. Ferrule sits against valve's compression seat.
Hand-thread compression nut onto valve.
Tighten compression nut
Hand-tight first.
With adjustable wrench: turn another 1/4 to 1/2 turn until firm.
Don't over-tighten — strips threads or distorts ferrule.
Verify the valve is square to the pipe (not cocked at an angle).
Install new supply line
Apply plumber's tape to the threads at the valve's outlet (3-4 wraps clockwise).
Connect new supply line: braided stainless to valve.
Hand-tight, then 1/4 turn with wrench.
Connect other end of supply line to toilet tank.
Restore water and test
Open main water shutoff slowly.
Open new toilet supply valve fully (counterclockwise to open quarter-turn ball valve).
Verify tank fills.
Flush toilet to verify normal flow.
Inspect for leaks
Check around new valve compression nut: dry.
Check supply line connections at valve and toilet: dry.
If any drip: tighten further (1/4 turn at a time).
Wait 10-15 minutes and inspect again.
24-hour follow-up check
Place paper towel under valve.
Check next day.
Damp paper towel = slow leak. Tighten compression nut another quarter turn.
Dry paper towel = solid install.
Common mistakes that cost you
- Over-tightening compression. Strips threads. Hand-tight + 1/4-1/2 turn enough.
- Reusing old ferrule. Old ferrule may not seat properly on new valve. Use new compression hardware.
- No plumber's tape on threads. Possible leak at valve/supply-line junction. Always tape.
- Working with main water on. Spray and damage when valve removed. Always main off.
- Not testing for leaks. Slow leaks become floods. Always 24-hr leak test.
