Ladder Safety: Rules That Actually Matter

Safety isn't a checklist you tick once. It's the order you do everything in. Half the injuries we see on job sites come from skipping a 60-second prep step.

Ladder falls cause more home renovation injuries than any other accident category. Most are entirely preventable with proper technique: choosing the right ladder for the job, setting it correctly, and maintaining three points of contact while climbing. The rules are simple; the discipline of following them every time is what separates safe DIY from a hospital visit.

This guide covers step ladders, extension ladders, and the safety practices for both.

Before you start

Three things to know:

1. Right ladder for the height. Step ladder: for indoor work, low-to-medium heights. Sized by height of the ladder itself; reach is typically 4 feet higher than the ladder's height. Extension ladder: for outdoor work, high-reach. Sized by extended length; reach is the working length minus 4 feet for safe overlap and standoff.

2. Duty rating. Type IAA (Extra Heavy Duty): 375 lbs. Type IA (Extra Heavy Duty): 300 lbs. Type I (Heavy Duty): 250 lbs. Type II (Medium Duty): 225 lbs. Type III (Light Duty): 200 lbs. Total weight = your weight + tools + materials. Pick a ladder rated for your actual load.

3. The 4-to-1 rule for extension ladders. An extension ladder should be set so the base is 1 foot away from the wall for every 4 feet of ladder height. A 16-foot ladder leans against a wall with the base 4 feet out. This angle (about 75°) is the safest balance between stability and feet slipping.

Three points of contact, always

Two hands and one foot, OR two feet and one hand — three contact points with the ladder at all times. Never carry tools or materials in both hands while climbing. Either belt-clip the tools, hoist with a rope, or have a helper hand them up.

The instant you have only two contact points (typically when reaching for something), you're at maximum fall risk. The discipline of three-point contact prevents most ladder falls.

Step-by-step instructions

Choose the right ladder

Reach height = ladder height + 4 feet (for step ladders, with safe top-rung use).

Extension ladder reach = working length minus 4 feet for overlap and standoff angle.

Don't use a too-short ladder — overreaching causes falls. Don't use a too-tall ladder if it can't be properly extended/positioned.

Inspect before climbing

Look for: cracked rails, loose rungs, missing rivets, bent components, damaged feet.

Test stability by setting the ladder up and pushing on it from various angles. Should not flex significantly.

Don't use damaged ladders. Repair (where possible) or replace.

Set up on stable ground

Ground or floor under the ladder must be flat, level, and solid. Soft ground (mud, grass, wet snow) causes the ladder feet to sink unevenly.

Use ladder leveling devices (boots, levellers, planks) on uneven surfaces. Never lean a ladder against an uneven base.

Step ladder: set up fully open with brace locked

Step ladders MUST be fully opened to spread the legs. The brace at the top must be locked in the open position.

Never use a step ladder leaning closed against a wall — they're not designed for this and tip easily.

Don't stand on the top step or top rung — these aren't rated for standing weight.

Extension ladder: 4-to-1 angle and tie off the top

Set the base 1 foot out from the wall for every 4 feet of ladder length.

The top should rest against the wall (or roof edge for roof access) with both rails firmly contacting.

For roof access: ladder should extend 3 feet above the roof edge so you can step off and on safely. Tie off the top to a secure anchor (bolt, tied around chimney, etc.) to prevent slip-out.

Climb with three points of contact

Two hands and one foot, OR two feet and one hand. Always.

Don't carry tools that require both hands — use a tool belt, hoist line, or helper.

Climb facing the ladder, not sideways or backwards.

Don't overreach

Your belt buckle should stay between the ladder rails — never reach so far that your hips pass beyond the rails.

If you need to reach further, climb down and reposition the ladder. Overreaching is a leading cause of ladder tip-over.

Descend slowly

Most ladder falls happen during descent. Move deliberately, one step at a time.

Don't skip rungs going down. Don't carry materials in both hands while descending.

What's the safest ladder for indoor work?

Step ladder rated for your weight plus tools (typically Type II or higher).

For working on cabinets, painting, or trim, a 6-foot step ladder reaches most ceiling heights safely.

How do I know if a ladder is damaged?

Look for: cracks in rails, loose or bent rungs, missing rivets, damaged feet, frayed ropes (extension ladders).

Test by setting up and pushing — should not flex, creak, or move excessively.

Can I use a ladder alone?

For small step ladders, yes. For tall extension ladders or roof access, having a helper hold the base reduces tip-over risk.

Working alone at heights also means no one can help if you fall — consider whether the work requires backup.
