Three things to settle:
1. Filter size. Filter size is printed on the side of the existing filter (e.g., 16x25x1, 20x25x4). The numbers are: length × width × thickness. Buy the same size or you'll be returning to the store. Common Canadian sizes: 16x20x1, 16x25x1, 20x25x1, 20x25x4 (the 4-inch deep filter is for high-efficiency systems and lasts longer).
2. MERV rating. Filters are rated by MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value): 1-4 (basic, fibreglass, traps lint), 5-8 (mid, captures dust and pollen — most homes), 9-12 (high, allergens), 13+ (HEPA-grade, very high resistance — only with HVAC engineered for it). For most homes, MERV 8-11 is the sweet spot. Higher MERV = more restriction = potentially less airflow if the system isn't sized for it.
3. Replacement frequency. Standard 1-inch filters: every 1-3 months. 4-inch filters: every 6-12 months. More frequently with pets, allergies, or recent renovation work generating dust. The package usually has a recommended interval.

MERV is a trade-off, not a 'higher = better'
Cheap fiberglass filters (MERV 1-4) protect the furnace from large debris but pass dust, allergens, and pollutants. Mid-grade pleated filters (MERV 8-11) capture most household particulates with acceptable airflow restriction.
MERV 13+ is HEPA-grade — these capture more allergens but heavily restrict airflow. On a furnace not engineered for it, this means the system runs longer to move the same air, costs more, and may damage the blower motor over time.
For most Ottawa homes, MERV 8-11 is the right choice. Don't 'upgrade' to MERV 13 without confirming your HVAC system can handle it.
Step-by-step instructions
Locate the filter slot
Look at the furnace. The filter slot is typically a slot or panel on the return air side — usually the side where the cold-air return duct enters the furnace.
If you can't find it on the furnace itself, check ducts entering the furnace — some setups have the filter slot in the return duct rather than at the furnace cabinet.
Remove the existing filter
Slide the old filter out. Note its orientation — most filters have an arrow indicating airflow direction (toward the furnace).
Inspect the filter. Heavily clogged filters are dark grey and visibly loaded; replace immediately. Lightly soiled filters can wait until the next regular interval.
Install the new filter
Slide the new filter into the slot in the same orientation as the old. The arrow on the filter frame should point toward the furnace (the direction of airflow).
Confirm the filter sits flush in the slot — no gaps where air could bypass the filter. Bypass airflow means unfiltered air reaches the furnace and reduces filter effectiveness.
Write the install date
With a marker, write the install date on the filter frame. This eliminates the 'when did I last change this?' question and makes the next replacement obvious.
Set a calendar reminder for 1-3 months out (depending on filter type and household needs).
Restore the panel and check airflow
If you removed an access panel, replace it.
Run the furnace for a minute. Confirm normal airflow at the supply registers. If airflow is reduced or the system sounds laboured, the filter may be too restrictive — switch to a lower MERV.

- Wrong size filter. Even 1-inch dimension difference creates bypass gaps. Always match the existing filter size exactly.
- Backwards orientation. Arrow points toward the furnace. Reversed direction reduces filter effectiveness and may collapse the filter into the furnace.
- MERV 13+ on standard furnace. Heavy airflow restriction stresses the blower and reduces system life. MERV 8-11 is the right choice for most homes.
- Forgetting for 12+ months. Clogged filters strangle the furnace, increase energy bills, and recirculate dust. Set calendar reminders.
