Plumbing vent stacks (also called vent pipes) carry sewer gas out of the home and equalize pressure in drain pipes — preventing P-traps from being siphoned dry. Every drain in the house must be vented within specific distances. Adding a new fixture (basement bathroom, kitchen island sink) usually requires extending or adding a vent stack. The work involves running pipe through framing and out through the roof.

This guide is an overview of vent stack work — sufficient for understanding the scope. Permit and licensed plumber recommended for new vent stacks; not recommended for first-time DIY plumbing.

Before you start

Three things to settle:

1. Code requirements are strict. Plumbing code defines: vent pipe size, distance from trap to vent, height above roof, distance from openings (windows, eaves). Wrong vent design causes traps to siphon dry — sewer gas in house. Engineering or licensed plumber required for new vent design.

2. Air admittance valve as alternative. AAV (air admittance valve) — a one-way valve that admits air into drain when needed but blocks sewer gas. Allowed in some jurisdictions as alternative to vent stack. Less invasive — no roof penetration. Not allowed in all jurisdictions; verify with municipality.

3. Permit and inspection mandatory. Plumbing permit required for new vent stack work. Inspector verifies sizing, slope, connections, and termination. Without permit: can't pass building inspection at sale, code violations.

Materials

  • PVC vent pipe (2-3 inch typical for residential)
  • PVC fittings (T, elbow, coupling) matched to pipe
  • PVC primer and cement
  • Roof boot/flashing (where vent penetrates roof)
  • Roof sealant
  • Pipe straps or hangers
  • OR Air Admittance Valve (AAV) for some installations

Air Admittance Valves are easier when allowed

AAV (Studor Mini-Vent or similar): replaces traditional vent stack with a small one-way valve.

No roof penetration. Installs at fixture or hidden in wall.

Verify with municipality before installing — not allowed in all jurisdictions.

Inexpensive part, available at any hardware store.

Step-by-step instructions

Plan the vent route

Vent must connect to drain pipe within code-specified distance (typically 5-6 ft for 2 inch trap).

Vent pipe runs vertically through framing and out through roof.

Or connects to existing main vent stack.

Map route, ensuring no obstructions (joists, ductwork).

Connect to drain pipe

Cut into existing drain pipe at vent connection point.

Install T-fitting (with vent at top, drain coming horizontally and continuing to main).

PVC primer and cement on connections.

Verify slope (1/4 inch per foot for drain) is maintained.

Run vertical vent pipe

PVC pipe vertical from T-fitting upward.

Through framing — drill holes through joists and studs as needed.

Don't compromise structural members; check Code for hole size limits in joists.

Support pipe every 4-5 feet with straps.

Penetrate roof

Continue vent pipe through attic.

Cut through roof sheathing, install pipe boot/flashing.

Vent extends 6-12 inches above roof.

Roof boot prevents leaks; roof sealant around boot perimeter.

OR connect to existing main vent

Alternative to roof penetration: connect new vent to existing main vent stack.

Most homes have one or two main vents; others can be 're-vented' to the main.

Each fixture's vent must rise above the highest fixture before tying in (per Code).

OR install AAV (where allowed)

Air Admittance Valve at fixture or in wall.

Replaces traditional vent for that fixture.

Verify with municipality.

AAV requires accessible location (not buried in wall) for replacement.

Pressure test the vent

Cap all openings to vent system.

Add water — verify all joints hold without leaking.

Pressure test confirms structural integrity before drywall.

Have inspector verify

Schedule inspection before drywall.

Inspector verifies: pipe sizes, slope, connections, vent termination, AAV placement.

Pass = continue with drywall.

Fail = fix issues, re-inspection.

Cover and finish

After passing inspection, drywall covers vent runs.

Vent is hidden in wall.

Outside: roof boot covered with shingle work for clean appearance.

Can I add a basement bathroom without a vent stack?

Some jurisdictions allow AAV in lieu of vent stack — verify with municipality.

If venting required: typically connects to existing main vent (rises through wall and ties in above all fixtures).

Without proper venting: P-traps siphon dry, sewer gas enters home.

How big should the vent be?

Typical residential: 2-3 inch.

Specific size depends on fixture units (number and type of fixtures).

Code lookup tables provide minimum sizes.

Engineer or plumber sizes the vent.

Can I use ABS for vent stacks?

Yes — ABS is acceptable in many jurisdictions.

Ontario typically allows both ABS and PVC.

Match new pipe to existing — don't mix ABS and PVC without proper transition fittings.
