A laser level projects a perfectly horizontal (or vertical) reference line on walls, floors, and ceilings. It eliminates the need to measure-and-mark consecutively across long distances and dramatically improves install accuracy on tasks like cabinet runs, baseboards, picture-hanging, and tile work. Modern self-levelling laser levels are affordable and pay back the investment on the first significant project.
This guide covers self-levelling cross-line lasers (the standard tool for residential work). Manual lasers, rotary lasers, and spec-grade lasers are different categories with their own use cases.
Before you start
Three things to settle:
1. Self-levelling vs manual. Self-levelling: tool internally compensates for slight tilt of the tripod or surface, automatically delivering true horizontal/vertical lines. Use this. Manual: relies on the user to set the tool perfectly level, with built-in bubble levels. Less reliable; obsolete for most work.
2. Battery and laser visibility. Lithium-ion battery models last longer per charge than alkaline. Indoor laser visibility is excellent. Outdoor in sunlight: requires a laser detector or a green laser (4x more visible than red in daylight).
3. Working range. Standard laser levels work to 30-50 feet indoors at full visibility. Beyond that, the line dims. Outdoor or beyond range: use a laser detector that picks up the beam mechanically.

Lock the laser before transport
Self-levelling laser levels have a pendulum that automatically levels the laser. When transporting, lock the pendulum (most tools have a small lock switch). Unlocked pendulums swing freely during transport, damaging the internal mechanism over time.
Always lock when not in active use. Unlock before powering on.
Step-by-step instructions
Position the laser level
Set the laser on a stable surface (tripod, table, floor) at the height you need the laser line.
For most installs, place at the height of the work — e.g., bottom of cabinet for cabinet install, top of baseboard for baseboard install.
Unlock the pendulum and power on
Slide the lock switch to the unlock position. The pendulum can now swing freely.
Press the power button. The laser line projects on the walls, the tool self-levels within 1-2 seconds, and the line stabilizes.
Verify the line is horizontal
Look at the line projected on the wall. It should appear horizontal — flat across.
If the line is steady (not flashing), the tool is level. If flashing, the tool is too tilted to self-level — adjust the surface until the tool is closer to level (within 4-5 degrees typically).
Mark reference points along the line
With the line stable, place pencil marks on walls or floors where the line crosses. These are reference points for your install.
For a cabinet run: mark every 24 inches along the line. For a baseboard install: mark every 6-8 feet for spot-checks.
Use the line as a continuous reference
Throughout the install, look at the laser line for alignment. Cabinets, trim, or fixtures should align with the laser line — not just the marked points.
The line continuously across the project area is what makes laser levels superior to chalk lines or tape measures.
Lock the laser before storage
When done with the install (or when transporting between rooms), lock the pendulum first, then power off.
Unlocked transport damages the pendulum mechanism over time.
Verify accuracy periodically
Laser levels can drift out of calibration after drops or extended use. Verify periodically by comparing to a long spirit level over a 6-foot span — if the laser shows true level on the spirit level, the tool is accurate.
If significantly off, the tool may need calibration (manufacturer service) or replacement.
Common mistakes that cost you
- Transporting unlocked. Pendulum mechanism gets damaged over time. Always lock for transport.
- Using a manual level when self-levelling is available. Manual lasers require precise tool placement. Self-levelling does the precision automatically.
- Not verifying accuracy. Drops and extended use cause drift. Periodic verification ensures reliable results.
- Working outdoors with red laser. Red lasers are barely visible in daylight. Use green laser or laser detector for outdoor work.

Self-levelling for any modern install. Manual only if you have specific reasons or a legacy tool. Self-levelling reduces user error to nearly zero.
How accurate are laser levels?
Mid-range tools: 1/8 inch over 30 feet. Premium tools: 1/16 inch over 30 feet. Either is far more accurate than chalk lines or tape measures.
For tile work and precision installs, premium accuracy matters. For general carpentry, mid-range is sufficient.
Can I use a laser level outdoors?
Yes with adjustments. Red lasers are barely visible in sunlight; use a green laser (4x brighter) or a laser detector that mechanically picks up the beam.
Distances over 100 feet typically require detectors regardless of laser colour.
