Hand injuries are the most common preventable renovation injury — splinters, lacerations from utility knives, crush injuries from tools, dermatitis from cement and solvents. The fix is matching the glove to the task. One pair of generic 'work gloves' is the wrong answer for most renovation work — different jobs need different protection levels and grip styles.
This guide walks through the five glove categories that cover ~95% of renovation tasks and how to pick the right one for what's in front of you.
Before you start
Three things to settle:
1. Cut resistance is a measured rating. A1 to A9 scale (or EN388 1 to 5). A1-A2: light cuts (handling rough wood). A4-A5: utility knives, sheet metal. A6-A9: glass, tile shards. Don't guess; check the cuff label.
2. Dexterity vs protection trade-off. Heavy leather gloves protect against impact and abrasion but make picking up screws impossible. Nitrile-coated knit gloves let you handle small parts but offer minimal cut protection. Pick based on the task, not 'tougher is better.'
3. One pair won't cover everything. Demo, framing, drywall, tile, painting, and electrical each want different gloves. A typical renovation needs 3-4 pairs in the kit — a modest outlay, far less than one ER visit.

The cuff label tells you everything
EN388 four-digit code: abrasion / cut / tear / puncture (each 1-4). cut rating A1-A9 is the modern standard. Look for these on the cuff before buying — generic 'tough work gloves' with no rating provide unknown protection.
Cut resistance is measured by how many grams of force a blade needs to cut through. A2 ≈ 500g, A5 ≈ 2200g, A9 ≈ 6000g+. Match the rating to the sharpest tool you'll handle that day.
Step-by-step instructions
Identify the day's primary task
Demo and debris handling: heavy leather. Framing and lumber: nitrile-coated knit. Drywall and utility knife work: A4+ cut-resistant. Painting and finishing: disposable nitrile. Tile and stone: A4+ cut-resistant.
If the day mixes tasks, plan to swap gloves. Don't try to cover everything with one pair.
Size correctly
Measure palm circumference (across knuckles, excluding thumb). 7-8 inches = M, 8-9 = L, 9-10 = XL.
Too loose: glove rolls or bunches, you lose dexterity, cuts can still reach skin.
Too tight: hand cramps within an hour, you stop wearing the gloves.
Try before buying when possible. Brands run differently — Mechanix runs small, Kinco runs large.
Pick the coating for your grip needs
Nitrile foam: best all-round grip, dry and light wet. Most general-purpose gloves use this.
Latex crinkle: maximum dry grip (rough lumber, masonry). Bad in oil.
Polyurethane (PU): thinnest, highest dexterity, used for fine work and electronics.
Bare leather: durable but slippery once wet.
Match cut resistance to the sharpest tool
Utility knife with a fresh blade: minimum A4. Dull-blade work or paper-thin sheet metal: A2-A3.
Glass, ceramic tile, or sheet metal cuts: A5-A6.
Above A6: specialty industrial work, rarely needed in residential reno.
Add chemical resistance when needed
Solvent-based paints, adhesives, and strippers: 8-mil disposable nitrile minimum. 4-mil thin medical gloves dissolve in lacquer thinner within minutes.
Concrete, mortar, thinset: alkaline burns develop over hours. Use waterproof rubber-coated gloves with long cuffs.
Drain cleaners and pool acids: butyl or neoprene chemical gloves only — not nitrile.
Check fit and don gloves correctly
Push fingers fully to the tips. Wiggle each finger.
Cuff should sit at or past the wrist bone. Loose cuffs let debris in.
If you'll be lifting overhead, gauntlets (8+ inch cuffs) keep dust out of sleeves.
Inspect gloves before and during use
Before: check for cuts, holes, or hardened patches (chemical contamination).
During: if you take them off and sweat-soak the linings, swap to a fresh pair. Wet linings make gloves slippery and reduce cut protection.
Cut-resistant gloves with a visible cut from a previous job are no longer cut-resistant — replace.
Care and storage
Air-dry between uses. Damp gloves harbour bacteria and fungus.
Don't machine-wash leather or coated gloves — destroys the coating.
Store in a clean dry bag, separated from solvents and chemicals.
Replace at first sign of compromised cuff, frayed coating, or chemical damage.
Common mistakes that cost you
- One glove for every task. Compromise glove protects against nothing well. Carry 3-4 pairs and swap to match the task.
- Wearing gloves with rotating tools. Drill chucks, drill press, table saw, lathe — gloves can catch and pull your hand in. Bare hands or tight nitrile only.
- Latex when allergies are unknown. Latex causes severe allergies in 1-6% of users. Default to nitrile.
- Using disposable gloves for cut protection. 4-mil nitrile cuts as easily as skin. Disposable gloves are chemical barriers, not cut barriers.
- Keeping torn gloves 'one more job'. A small cut in a cut-resistant glove negates the rating along that line. Replace immediately.

No for table saws, drill presses, lathes, or any rotating tool that could catch fabric.
