How to Install a Bathroom Grab Bar

A grab bar is the single highest-value piece of bathroom hardware you can install. Done right, it holds 250 lbs of dynamic load, prevents the most common cause of senior-aged hospital admissions in Canada, and is invisible enough to not feel medical. Done wrong, it's a false promise: a bar that looks installed but pulls free of the wall the first time someone actually grabs it under stress.

This is not the same job as installing a towel bar. The hardware ratings are higher, the wall preparation matters more, and the Ontario Building Code has specific load and anchor requirements when grab bars are part of an accessibility installation. This guide walks through a residential install assuming you're either retrofitting an existing tile or drywall bathroom, or installing as part of a renovation where the wall is open and you can add blocking.

Before you start

Five things to confirm before you cut into any wall:

1. Why this bar exists. A grab bar prevents the user from falling. The dynamic load is not a casual hand-rest — it's the user's full body weight pulled sideways or downward when they slip. Pick hardware rated 250 lbs minimum, period. The 50-lb-rated bar at the discount big-box store is a towel bar dressed up; replace it before you install.

2. Wall type. Tile around the tub or shower is the most common install location and the most demanding. The bar must mount through the tile into solid backing — either a stud or properly-rated solid blocking installed during framing. Drywall-only mounts with toggle bolts are not acceptable for grab bars regardless of anchor rating; the drywall itself fails before the anchor does.

3. Stud or blocking. If the wall is open (during renovation), this is easy: install 2x6 or 2x8 horizontal blocking between studs at the planned bar location. If the wall is closed, you need at least one stud per bracket OR a specialty grab-bar mounting plate that spans multiple studs and provides a wider anchor base. Toggle bolts in tile-over-drywall alone do not meet the 250-lb requirement.

4. Bar location and angle. Three primary positions: vertical grab bar on the shower entry wall (helps stepping in/out), horizontal bar on the long wall of a tub (helps getting up from a seated position), and angled bar at 45 degrees in the shower (helps with both standing and turning). Most accessibility-focused installs use all three. The Ontario Building Code's barrier-free requirements specify exact placements; consult Section 3.8 if this is for a barrier-free dwelling.

5. User height and reach. Bars should be installed for the specific user when possible. The standard 33-to-36-inch height for horizontal bars works for most adults, but a shorter or taller user may need it adjusted. For a household with multiple users, install vertical bars (which work for any height) plus one horizontal bar at the average household height.

  • Safety glasses and dust mask
  • Spray bottle of water (for tile drilling)

Materials

  • Grab bar rated 250 lbs minimum (verify the rating on the package — Moen, Delta, or specialty accessibility brands)
  • #10 × 2-1/2" stainless steel screws (for stud or blocking)
  • Specialty grab-bar mounting plates (if no stud is at the bar location)
  • Clear silicone caulk (mildew-resistant, for tile installs)
  • Solid wood blocking (2x6 or 2x8) — only if installing during renovation with open wall
  • WingIts or Solid Mount specialty grab bar anchors (only certified grab-bar anchors, NOT generic toggles)

Toggle bolts and snaptoggles are not grab-bar hardware

A snaptoggle bolt holds 30 to 80 lbs. A grab bar must hold 250 lbs of dynamic load. The math doesn't work, even with two anchors per bracket and full margin.

If you cannot get into a stud, the only acceptable retrofit anchor is a specialty grab-bar plate (WingIts brand or equivalent) that spans multiple studs and creates a 250-lb-rated mounting platform. These plates are inexpensive and designed specifically for this load. Anything else is a liability — and in a barrier-free dwelling, a code violation.

Step-by-step instructions

Pick the bar locations and lengths for your user

Walk into the bathroom as if using it. Stand outside the tub or shower as if about to step in. Identify the points where balance is least stable and where a hand naturally reaches for support.

For a standard bathtub: a 12-inch vertical grab bar on the wall facing the tub at the entry end, mounted 33 to 36 inches above the tub rim. Plus a 24-inch horizontal bar on the long wall, mounted 33 to 36 inches above the tub bottom — within reach when seated.

For a stand-up shower: a 16-to-18-inch vertical bar on the latch-side wall just inside the door (helps stepping in), plus a 24-or-32-inch angled bar at 45 degrees on the long wall (helps standing and turning).

Pro tip: mark each proposed bar location with painter's tape on the wall. Have the actual user simulate the motion (stepping in, sitting down, standing up) and adjust the tape until the location feels natural. The tape costs nothing and the bar feels invisible-natural once the location is right.

Locate the studs or blocking behind the wall

On a closed wall, sweep with an electronic stud finder. Note that bathroom walls often have steel plumbing strapping or pipes that confuse cheap stud finders — use a deep-scan model that distinguishes wood from metal.

On a tile wall, the stud finder may not read accurately because of the tile substrate. As a backup, look for grout lines that align with where you'd expect studs at 16-inch centres. Tap the wall and listen — a hollow tap usually means between studs, a duller tap means over a stud or pipe.

Mark each bracket location precisely

With the bar held against the wall at the chosen position, mark the centres of each mounting hole through the bar's bracket flanges with a pencil. Most grab bars have 2 or 3 screw holes per bracket — note all of them.

Verify both bracket marks are at the proper height by measuring from the floor (or tub rim). A bar that's even 1/2 inch off-level looks medical and feels wrong in the hand.

Plan the anchor strategy per bracket

For each bracket, you need at least one screw landing in solid framing — stud, blocking, or a specialty plate. Pick:

Drill the pilot holes (drywall)

On a drywall-only wall (no tile): use a 1/8-inch wood bit for stud holes, or follow the specialty anchor's instructions for plate-mount anchors.

Hold the drill perpendicular to the wall. Drill straight in, through the drywall, and into the framing behind. The pilot hole should go at least 1-1/2 inches deep into the stud to give the screw full bite.

Drill the pilot holes (tile)

Tile drilling is the single highest-skill part of this job. Get it wrong and you crack a tile that is costly and disruptive to replace.

Apply painter's tape over the drill point — two layers if the tile is glossy. Mark through the tape with pencil. Use a glass-and-tile bit at low speed (around 300 to 500 RPM) with very light pressure. Spray a small amount of water onto the bit during drilling to keep the tile cool — heat is the main reason tiles crack.

Once you're through the tile glaze (you'll feel a slight pop and the bit stops drilling glass), switch to a regular wood pilot bit and continue into the stud or blocking behind the tile. Do not switch the drill to hammer mode at any point — hammer mode shatters tile.

Drilling pro tip: if the bit walks on the tile glaze despite tape, drill a tiny indentation by hand with a sharp punch first, OR use a 1/16-inch bit to make a starter notch that the tile bit can grip. Patience here saves the install.

Drive the mounting screws

Set the drill clutch to a medium setting (around 8 to 12 on most cordless drills — higher than for towel bars because grab-bar screws need more torque).

Drive #10 × 2-1/2-inch stainless steel screws through the bracket flange, through the tile or drywall, and at least 1-1/2 inches deep into the stud or blocking. The bracket should pull tight against the wall surface; the screw heads should sit flush against the bracket flange.

Use stainless steel only — bathroom moisture corrodes regular zinc-plated screws over years and the corrosion weakens the screw head right when the bar is needed most.

Apply the silicone moisture seal

On any tile or shower-area install, run a thin bead of clear silicone caulk around the bracket base where it meets the tile or wall surface. Smooth the bead with a wet fingertip.

This isn't decorative. It's the only thing keeping shower water from finding its way through the bracket-mount hole, into the wall cavity, and into the wood substrate. Without the silicone, you'll have a rotted stud behind the tile in 5 to 8 years and a tile re-do plus structural repair.

Stress-test the bar with full body weight

This is non-negotiable. Grip the bar with both hands and pull downward and sideways with your full body weight. The bar must not move at all — no rotation, no shift, no creak.

Then have the actual user (or someone of similar weight) test the same way. If anyone feels any movement, the install fails. Take the bar down, redo with proper anchors. Do not put a partially-tested bar into service.

A bar that pulls free in actual use is worse than no bar at all, because the user trusts it. The stress test now is the only way to confirm it'll hold when it matters.

Add a grab-bar identification label (optional but recommended)

Modern grab bars are often invisible — they look like upgraded towel bars. In a household with visitors or care providers, that's a problem; people use them as towel bars and the bar gets loaded with wet towels in addition to grab loads.

A small adhesive label on the bracket end indicating 'GRAB BAR' or '250 LBS' clarifies the function. Many accessibility-focused brands include these in the box. Apply per their instructions.

Document the install for future maintenance

Write the date, the anchor type used (stud, blocking, plate), and the bar's rated load on a small label inside the bathroom vanity or the back of the medicine cabinet. The next homeowner, contractor, or accessibility assessor needs this information to confirm the install meets code.

If the install was part of a barrier-free dwelling certification, photograph the install and keep the photos with the home's permit records. Some retrofits require inspector verification.

Re-test annually as part of bathroom maintenance

Every 12 months, grip the bar and stress-test with full body weight again. A grab bar that loosens over time has a stripped anchor, a corroded screw, or moisture damage to the substrate. Catch any of these early and a 5-minute re-snug saves the bar.

If the bar moves at all during the annual check, take it down completely and inspect the wall behind it. Small soft spots in drywall around the screws, or rust on the screw heads, are early warnings of moisture intrusion that needs immediate attention.

Can I install a grab bar without finding a stud?

Yes, but only with a specialty grab-bar mounting plate rated for 250 lbs. Brands like WingIts make stud-less grab bar plates that span multiple studs and create a rated mounting platform. Generic toggle bolts and snaptoggles are not rated for grab bar loads regardless of how many you use.

If you have any choice in the matter, find a stud or add blocking during a renovation. Stud-mounted is the strongest installation.

What's the proper height for a grab bar?

Standard horizontal bars sit 33 to 36 inches above the floor (or tub rim, in a tub install). Vertical bars typically span 12 to 18 inches starting at 33 inches up. Angled bars at 45 degrees in showers usually start at 33 inches and rise to 48 inches.

These are general standards. For specific users, adjust to where the bar feels naturally graspable — often within 2 to 3 inches of the standard, but personalized to the user's height and reach.

Is a grab bar required by code?

In Ontario, the Building Code requires grab bars in barrier-free dwellings (Section 3.8). For a standard residential bathroom not designated as barrier-free, grab bars are not strictly required by code — but they are strongly recommended in any household with seniors, mobility issues, or aging-in-place planning.

If you're applying for a CMHC accessibility grant or a similar program, the grab bar must meet specific code requirements including load rating, anchor type, and placement. Verify with the program before installing.

How do I install a grab bar in a fibreglass tub surround?

Fibreglass surrounds typically have an air gap behind them and no continuous backing. A grab bar in a fibreglass surround needs the surround to be reinforced from behind — either by accessing the wall and adding blocking, or by using a specialty fibreglass-rated grab bar plate that distributes load over a wider area.

Do not screw a grab bar directly into a fibreglass surround panel without backing. The fibreglass cracks under load and fails catastrophically.

Should I use a suction-cup grab bar instead?

No. Suction-cup grab bars are convenience products, not safety products. They cannot meet the 250-lb dynamic load requirement and they routinely fail when the user needs them most — usually because the user has been using them as a balance aid (light load) and the suction has degraded without warning.

Suction-cup bars are acceptable for short-term travel use (a hotel room, a short stay). For a permanent residential install, only mechanically-fastened grab bars rated 250 lbs are appropriate.

What's the difference between code-rated and code-required grab bars?

Ontario Building Code Section 3.8 (barrier-free design) is the accessibility standard that governs Ottawa renovations — it sets grab-bar heights, placement, and clearances. Confirm the specifics with your designer, as they can be more detailed than general aging-in-place guidance.

Most quality grab bars sold in Canada are rated to OBC barrier-free requirements. For a residential aging-in-place install, code-rated hardware exceeds OBC requirements and is the safe default.

Grab bars are one of the few small jobs where doing it wrong is genuinely dangerous.
