A dimmer switch transforms a room. The same pot lights, the same fixture, the same bulbs — but with full-range control from gentle ambient to bright task light. Modern LED-compatible dimmers install in 20-40 minutes per switch. The job is similar to a standard light switch swap with one critical addition: bulb-dimmer compatibility, where most failed dimmer installs go wrong.
This guide covers single-pole dimmers (one switch controls the light) and 3-way dimmers (two switches share control). Both are within DIY range; 3-way dimmers require slightly more attention to which switch in the pair gets the dimmer.
Before you start
Three things to settle:
1. Bulb compatibility. LED bulbs only dim on dimmers specifically rated for LED. Mismatched dimmer-bulb combinations cause flickering, buzzing, or refusing to dim below 50%. Check the bulb package for 'dimmable' marking, then check the dimmer for an LED compatibility list. Lutron Caseta and Maestro models are widely compatible. Avoid pairing 'dimmable' LED bulbs with old incandescent-only dimmers.
2. Single-pole vs 3-way. If only one switch controls the light, you have a single-pole switch — replace with a single-pole dimmer. If two switches control the light (one at each end of a hallway, top and bottom of stairs), you have 3-way switches — replace one of them with a 3-way dimmer; the other stays as a regular 3-way switch. You cannot have two dimmers in a 3-way circuit.
3. Dimmer wattage rating. Each dimmer is rated for a maximum total wattage of bulbs it controls. Standard dimmers handle 600W (typical) — that's 6 100W incandescent bulbs OR 60+ 10W LEDs. Verify the new dimmer's rating exceeds the total connected wattage.

LED + dimmer compatibility is real
Pairing a dimmable LED bulb with a non-LED-rated dimmer (older incandescent dimmer) causes flickering at low brightness, refusal to dim below 30-50%, audible buzzing, or shortened bulb life.
Buy a dimmer specifically rated for LED. Lutron Maestro CL, Lutron Caseta, and most Leviton Decora dimmers are LED-compatible. Pair with bulbs that say 'dimmable' on the package — non-dimmable bulbs flicker or burn out quickly when dimmed.
Step-by-step instructions
Identify the existing switch type
Single-pole: the existing switch has 2 brass screws plus a green ground screw. Two wires connected to the brass screws.
3-way: the existing switch has 3 screws (often labeled L1, L2, common) plus green ground. Three wires connected.
Buy a dimmer matching the existing switch type.
Turn off the breaker
At the main electrical panel, switch off the breaker for the circuit. Try the existing switch — light should not respond.
Verify with a non-contact voltage tester at the switch location before disconnecting wires.
Photograph the existing wiring
Remove the cover plate. Take photos of the wiring before disconnecting anything. Reference for re-wiring.
Disconnect the existing switch
Remove the two switch-mount screws and pull the switch out of the box.
Disconnect each wire from the switch. Note: some dimmers have wire leads (pre-attached pigtails) instead of screw terminals — this changes the wiring approach.
Connect the dimmer's wire leads (if applicable)
If the new dimmer has wire leads (typical for LED-compatible dimmers), connect each lead to the corresponding wire from the box using wire nuts.
Black to black (load), black to black (line), green/copper to ground. Match the labels on the dimmer's leads to your wires.
Twist matching wires together with pliers, then secure with a wire nut. Twist clockwise as viewed looking down on the connection. Pull-test each connection.
Or connect to terminals (if dimmer has screw terminals)
Loop each wire clockwise around its terminal screw. Tighten firmly. Pull-test.
For 3-way dimmer: identify common wire
3-way switches have a 'common' terminal (usually different-colored screw or labeled). The common wire continues through to the other 3-way switch.
On the dimmer, connect the common wire to the dimmer's labeled common terminal. The other two wires (travelers) go to the dimmer's traveler terminals.
Wrong wire on common produces a non-functional or partially-functional 3-way circuit.
Mount the dimmer in the box
Fold wires into the back of the box. Position the dimmer in the box opening.
Drive the mount screws to secure the dimmer to the box.
Snap or screw the cover plate into place.
Restore power and test
Switch the breaker back on. Test the dimmer — full brightness, dim down to minimum, full off.
Watch for flickering, buzzing, or unresponsive dimming. Any of these indicates incompatibility — verify dimmer-bulb pairing.
Adjust low-end trim (some dimmers)
Some LED dimmers have a small adjustment screw or trim setting that controls the lowest dimming level. Default is usually too low for some LED bulbs (causes flicker at minimum).
Per the dimmer's instructions, adjust the trim until the bulbs dim smoothly without flickering at the bottom of the range.
Common mistakes that cost you
- LED bulbs on incandescent-only dimmers. Causes flickering, buzzing, refusing to dim. Buy LED-compatible dimmers.
- Wrong type for the circuit. Single-pole dimmer on a 3-way circuit doesn't work. Match dimmer to existing switch type.
- Two dimmers in a 3-way circuit. Only one switch in a 3-way pair can be a dimmer. The other stays as a regular 3-way switch.
- Wrong wire on common terminal of 3-way. Reverses the circuit logic. Identify common before connecting.
- Skipping voltage tester check. Always verify power is off before touching wires. Breaker labels lie.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my LED bulb flicker when dimmed?
Three causes: bulb isn't actually dimmable (despite marketing), dimmer isn't LED-compatible, or dimmer's low-end trim is set too low.
Verify both bulb and dimmer are LED-rated. Adjust the dimmer's trim if it has one. If still flickering, swap bulbs or upgrade dimmer.
Can I install a smart dimmer?
Yes — Lutron Caseta, Leviton Decora Smart, and others install similarly to standard dimmers. They need a neutral wire (white) at the switch location for power. Older switch boxes may not have neutral.
If neutral isn't present, some smart dimmers work without (with reduced features), or you'll need an electrician to run neutral.
Will a dimmer work in any switch location?
Most locations, yes. Some specialty applications need specific dimmers: ceiling fans need fan-rated dimmers (regular dimmers can damage motors), low-voltage track lights need low-voltage-rated dimmers.
For standard ceiling fixtures, recessed pots, and chandeliers, standard LED-rated dimmers work.
