How to Replace a Light Switch

Replacing a single-pole light switch is one of the most accessible electrical jobs — two wires, four screws, 20 minutes per switch. The risks are real (working with live electrical wiring) but manageable with proper procedure: turn off the breaker, verify with a voltage tester, then work. In Ontario, the Electrical Safety Authority allows homeowners to do their own electrical work but requires permits for new installations and certain modifications.

This guide covers a like-for-like switch replacement (single-pole standard switch swap, no rewiring). 3-way switches, dimmer switches, and smart switches use similar but slightly different wiring covered in their own guides.

Before you start

Three things to settle:

1. Permit requirements. Like-for-like residential switch replacement (replacing one switch with the same type — single-pole for single-pole, etc.) typically does not require an ESA permit in Ontario. Adding a new switch, replacing with a different type (single-pole to 3-way), or running new wiring requires a permit. When uncertain, call ESA — fines for unpermitted work are real and can void home insurance.

2. Identify the switch type. Single-pole: two terminal screws, one switch position controls one light. 3-way: three terminal screws (plus ground), two switches control one light. 4-way: four terminal screws, used in 3+ switch chains. Replace with the same type — wrong type doesn't fit the existing wiring.

3. Voltage tester is non-negotiable. Breaker labels are often wrong (estimated 30% of homes). The only safe verification is a non-contact voltage tester, sold at any hardware store. Even after switching off the breaker, test the switch wires with the tester before touching them.

  • Wire nuts (in case existing connections need redo)
  • Electrical tape (optional reinforcement)

Voltage tester usage is the safety step

Touch the tester to each wire individually. The tester glows red and beeps if voltage is present. Verify ALL wires are dead before touching them.

If the tester shows voltage even after the breaker is off, you've turned off the wrong breaker. Find the correct one — don't proceed thinking the tester is wrong.

Step-by-step instructions

Identify the breaker

Turn the switch off and on. The light should respond. This confirms the switch controls a specific light.

Try breakers at the main panel until the light goes dark. Label that breaker if it isn't already.

Verify power is off with a voltage tester

Remove the switch cover plate (one or two screws).

Without touching wires, hold the voltage tester near each wire connected to the switch. Tester should not light up or beep — confirming no voltage.

If tester shows voltage, the breaker is wrong. Stop, find the correct breaker, retest.

Photograph the existing wiring

Take a clear photo of the switch's wiring before you disconnect anything. Reference for if you get confused.

Most single-pole switches have: 2 black wires (line and load) on the brass screws, 1 ground (green or bare) on the green screw. Some have white wires that are also functioning as hot — these should be marked with black tape (per code) but often aren't in older homes.

Unscrew the switch from the box

Remove the two screws holding the switch to the electrical box. The switch pulls out of the box, with wires still attached.

Be gentle — older wires can be brittle and break if bent sharply.

Disconnect the wires

Loosen the terminal screws (counterclockwise) and pull each wire free.

If wires are 'pushed in' through back-stab holes (instead of looped around screws), insert a small flathead screwdriver into the release slot to free each wire — pulling without releasing damages the wire.

Strip wire ends if needed

If wire ends look damaged or show insufficient bare copper, strip 5/8 inch of insulation off each end with wire strippers.

Bare copper should be clean and shiny. Tarnished or oxidized copper makes poor electrical contact.

Connect wires to the new switch

For single-pole: connect the two black/coloured wires (line and load) to the two brass terminal screws. Either wire can go to either screw — single-pole switches don't care about polarity.

Connect the bare/green ground wire to the green ground screw on the switch.

Loop each wire clockwise around its screw, then tighten. Clockwise direction means the wire stays in place when the screw tightens, instead of being pushed out.

Push the switch into the box and screw to the wall

Carefully fold the wires into the back of the box, with the switch positioned in the box opening.

Drive the two switch-mount screws to secure the switch to the box. The switch should sit flush with the wall surface.

Re-install the cover plate

Snap or screw the cover plate back into place over the switch.

Restore power and test

Turn the breaker back on at the main panel. Try the switch — light should respond.

If the light doesn't work, the wiring is reversed or a connection is loose. Power off again, re-verify, retest.

Do I need a permit to replace a light switch?

Like-for-like residential switch replacement typically does not require a permit in Ontario. Adding new switches, changing types, or running new wiring requires an ESA permit.

Homeowners in Ontario can do their own electrical work without a license but must follow code and may need permits depending on scope.

Why does my switch have white wires?

In switch loops (where power goes to the light first, then the switch), white wires sometimes function as hot wires. Code requires these wires to be marked with black tape to indicate hot use, but older installations often skip this.

Treat all wires at a switch as potentially live. The voltage tester confirms which are hot.

Can I install a smart switch?

Yes, but with extra considerations. Smart switches need a neutral wire (white) to maintain power for WiFi/electronics. Older installations sometimes don't have neutral at the switch — you'll need to use a smart switch that doesn't require neutral, or have an electrician run a neutral.

Smart switches also need to fit in standard switch boxes — older smaller boxes may be too cramped for the larger smart-switch bodies.
