Before you start
Three things to settle:
1. Vented vs solid soffit. Vented soffit (perforated panels): allows attic intake ventilation. Required for typical home with ridge vent. Solid soffit: no ventilation; only for fully enclosed eaves on specific designs.
2. Fascia carries gutter weight. Fascia must be solid wood (typically 1×8 or 1×10 cedar or pressure-treated) — gutter brackets screw into it. Aluminum fascia covers the wood for weather protection. Don't put gutters into aluminum-only fascia.
3. Match style to existing. Soffit material (aluminum, vinyl, wood), profile (panels vs flat), and colour should match existing or coordinate with new exterior. Mismatched soffit looks added-on.

Together: continuous airflow from soffits through attic to ridge.
Without proper soffit ventilation, ridge vent doesn't work.
Step-by-step instructions
Remove existing soffit and fascia
Pry old aluminum soffit panels from F-channel.
Remove fascia covers.
Inspect underlying wood fascia for rot or damage.
Replace damaged wood fascia with new pressure-treated lumber.
Inspect rafter tails and sheathing
Look for rotted or damaged rafter ends.
Replace damaged areas before installing new soffit.
Sheathing edges should be straight; cut back any rotted edges.
Install F-channel along outer edge of fascia
F-channel: aluminum profile that holds soffit panel edge.
Nail along the outer (gutter side) edge of the wood fascia.
Continuous along the entire eave length.
Verify level.

Cut soffit panels to length
Measure between F-channel and J-channel.
Cut aluminum panel with tin snips.
Standard panel widths fit into the channels.
Install soffit panels
Slide each panel into F-channel and J-channel.
Panel slides along the channels; tongues lock together.
Continue across entire soffit span.
Last panel: cut to fit the remaining space.
Install fascia cover over wood fascia
Aluminum fascia cover bent to fit the wood fascia profile (typically L-shape).
Pre-bent or bent on site.
Slide over wood fascia.
Nail at top edge (drip edge area, hidden by next course of shingles).
Install gutter (if applicable)
Gutter brackets screw into the wood fascia (through the aluminum fascia cover).
Aluminum gutter sections fit into brackets.
Slope gutter 1/4 inch per 10 ft toward downspouts.
Connect downspouts.
Caulk seams and edges
Polyurethane caulk where soffit meets siding (J-channel).
Where fascia meets soffit (F-channel area).
Where fascia meets siding at gable ends.
Match caulk colour to soffit/fascia colour.
Final inspection
Walk around house, looking up at soffit and fascia.
Should be straight, level, with no visible gaps.
Vented soffit should be visibly perforated.
Roof line should look clean and finished.
Common mistakes that cost you
- Solid soffit on attic-vented house. No intake ventilation. Vented soffit panels mandatory.
- Gutter brackets into aluminum fascia only. Pulls out under load. Brackets into wood fascia.
- Crooked soffit panels. Visible from below. Verify F and J channels are level.
- Skipping caulk. Wind-driven rain enters joints. Caulk all seams.
- Replacing rotted wood with same untreated. Will rot again. Pressure-treated or cedar for outdoor exposure.
