An over-the-door or wall-mounted ironing board is the laundry-room space-saver that more homes should have. Folded flat against the door or wall, it takes 4 inches of depth. Folded down for use, it provides a full-size ironing surface at adjustable height. The mount has to handle the dynamic load of someone leaning into the iron — typically 20 to 35 lbs of pressure during use — without the board tilting or pulling free.
This guide covers two install types: over-the-door (clips over the top of a hollow-core or solid door) and wall-mounted (screws into a wall, ideally into studs). Both have the same load requirements; the mount type depends on your space.
Before you start
Three things to settle:
1. Door type for over-the-door installs. Over-the-door mounts work on standard 1-3/8 inch interior doors. The brackets clip over the top edge and the door's weight plus the user's leaning force holds the board. They do not work on hollow-core doors with significant flexing — the door bends under ironing pressure and the mount swings sideways. Solid-core or solid-wood doors are required.
2. Wall mount needs studs. Wall-mounted ironing boards experience 30+ lbs of dynamic load when someone leans into the iron. Drywall anchors alone cannot handle this reliably. Plan to mount with at least 2 screws into studs.
3. Height and orientation. Standard ironing-board height is adjustable from 30 to 38 inches. Mount the wall bracket so the board's lowest position is 30 inches above the floor and the highest is around 38 inches. Vertical orientation: the board folds upward against the wall when stored, so the mount's pivot point is at the top.

Skip hollow-core doors entirely
Most modern interior doors in Canadian homes are hollow-core (a thin veneer over a honeycomb cardboard interior). These doors are too weak to hold an ironing board mount under use loads — the door bends visibly when leaned on, the mount swings, and the door's hinges work loose over months.
Either use a solid-core door (heavier, denser sound when knocked), or commit to a wall-mount install instead. Don't try to mount over a hollow door.
Step-by-step instructions
Decide over-door or wall-mount
Over-door: best for laundry rooms with a closet door, no permanent wall-damage to make, but limited to solid-core doors only.
Wall-mount: more permanent but works in any space, fold-down board sits 30-38 inches above the floor, board folds up against the wall when stored.
For over-door installs: hang the brackets
Clip the over-door brackets over the top edge of the door. The brackets should sit firmly with the bracket arms extending downward on the door's side that faces into the room.
Some over-door units have adjustable bracket spacing — set the spacing to match the door's width and slide the brackets to position.
Verify the brackets are level and equally seated on the door.
For wall-mount: locate studs and mark mount position
Sweep with a stud finder to locate studs along the wall section where the ironing board will mount.
Mark the mount bracket's position. The mount's pivot point should be at the top edge of the deployed board's stored position — typically around 38 inches above the floor.
Confirm the mount holes can hit at least 2 studs. If not, shift the mount horizontally to align with stud spacing.
Pre-drill and mount (wall-mount)
Drill 1/8-inch pilot holes into the studs where the mount bracket's screws will land.
For any non-stud screw points, drill 1/2-inch holes for snaptoggle bolts.
Drive #10 × 2-1/2 inch wood screws through the bracket into the studs. The bracket should sit flush against the wall, no rotation, no movement under hand pressure.
Install the ironing board onto the mount
Per the kit's instructions, insert the board's mounting hinge into the wall or door bracket. Most kits use a pin-and-clip mechanism that locks the board in place.
Test the fold-down motion. The board should rotate smoothly from vertical (stored) to horizontal (use) and lock in the use position.
Verify level when deployed
With the board in use position, lay a level on the ironing surface. The board should be horizontal — front-to-back and side-to-side.
If tilted, the mount itself isn't level. Take it down and re-mount.
Stress-test by leaning into it
Press down firmly on the centre of the board with both hands, simulating heavy ironing pressure. The mount should not move at all.
Push sideways briefly to test rotation resistance. The board should stay locked in position.
If anything shifts, the install isn't solid enough. Re-anchor with stronger fasteners or add additional mount points.
Adjust the height to user preference
Most ironing boards have height-adjust mechanisms — typically a lever that releases the board's leg or pivot to slide between heights.
Set the height to where the user's elbow is bent at 90 degrees with hands flat on the board surface. Standing-height ironing should not require stooping.
Common mistakes that cost you
- Mounting over a hollow-core door. Hollow doors flex under load, swing the mount, and damage the door hinges. Use solid-core doors only.
- Drywall anchors only. 30 lb of dynamic load fails drywall anchors. Always stud-anchor at least 2 mount screws.
- Wrong height. Too high causes shoulder strain; too low causes back strain. Adjust to elbow-90 with the user actually standing at the board.
- Not stress-testing. A mount that holds when empty may shift under leaning load. Always test with realistic pressure before regular use.

Quality wall-mounted ironing board kits handle 50 to 100 lbs of static load. Dynamic load during use is typically 20 to 35 lbs. Most stud-anchored mounts have substantial margin.
Drywall-only mounts (no stud) are rated lower and fail at sustained dynamic loads. Always stud-anchor.
Can I mount on a closet door?
Solid-core closet doors: yes. Hollow-core: no. Verify by knocking — solid sounds dense, hollow sounds drum-like.
If your closet door is hollow but you have nowhere else for the mount, an over-the-top bracket adds rigidity but still has limited use load. Most installs benefit from going to wall-mount instead.
