2. Coatings vary in protection. Light oil (3-in-1, machine oil): basic protection, evaporates over months. Wax-based protection (Boeshield, Bostik): longer-lasting, doesn't attract dust. Silicone spray: easy application, moderate protection. Camellia oil: traditional, food-safe option.
3. Use prevents rust. Tools used regularly stay clean — handling them removes early rust spots. Tools that sit unused are most prone to rust. If you have specialty tools that go unused for months, periodic inspection and re-coating is needed.

Lower workshop humidity
Dehumidifier in basement workshops: aim for 40-50% RH year-round.
Garage workshops: insulate, dehumidify summer, heat winter.

Clean tools before storage
Wipe sawdust, pitch, and debris off steel surfaces.
Tools wet from cleaning: dry thoroughly before applying coating.
Pitch on saw blades: pitch remover spray or Simple Green.
Apply rust protection coating

Heavy rust: phosphoric acid converter (Naval Jelly) followed by wire brush, then oil/wax.
Pitting: cosmetic damage may remain; tool still functional.
Refresh coating every 6-12 months
Boeshield wax coating: lasts 6-12 months in normal conditions.
Re-apply on schedule, don't wait for rust.
Tools used regularly need less because of handling, but check periodically.
Common mistakes that cost you
- Damp basement, no dehumidifier. Rust on every steel surface. Dehumidify.
- WD-40 as rust protection. WD-40 is water displacer, not long-term protection. Use Boeshield or oil instead.
- Steel tools in plastic bin with no protection. Plastic doesn't seal moisture. Coat tools and use silica gel.
- Skipping inspection. Light rust caught early wipes off. Late, pitting remains.
- Using rusty tools. Rust transfers to workpiece (rust marks on cuts). Clean before use.
