Before you start
Three things to settle:
1. Tape divisions are binary halves. 1 inch divides into 2 (1/2), then each half into 2 (1/4), each quarter into 2 (1/8), each eighth into 2 (1/16). Standard tapes go to 1/16; finer tapes to 1/32. The pattern: longer marks for halves, shorter for quarters, shorter still for eighths and sixteenths.
2. Hook is intentionally loose. The metal hook at the end of the tape moves slightly. This is intentional — it accounts for the hook's thickness when measuring inside (push) vs outside (pull). Don't try to fix it; the slight movement is correct.
3. Imperial vs metric depends on context. Most Canadian construction uses imperial (feet, inches, fractions) for general framing and rough work. Metric (mm) is required for permit drawings and increasingly for cabinets/counters. Tapes typically have both — read whichever your project uses.

Read the longest mark crossing your spot
When marking a measurement, find the longest mark closest to your edge. That's the most natural fraction to call.
Example: at 5 inches and 11/16 — the 1/2 mark and 1/16 mark are visible. The 11/16 is past the 1/2 mark, three more 1/16 marks. Call it '5 11/16' rather than counting individual 1/16ths every time.

Identify the inch marks (longest)
Inch marks are the longest lines, numbered (often in red on the foot mark every 12 inches).
Numbers appear at every inch on most tapes.
Identify 1/2 inch marks (second-longest)
Halfway between inch marks: a slightly shorter line.
1/2 inch is the most common 'middle' fraction.
Identify 1/4 inch marks
Halfway between an inch mark and a 1/2 mark.
Slightly shorter than 1/2 marks.
1/4 inch and 3/4 inch fall here.
Identify 1/8 inch marks

Use the burn-an-inch trick for inside measurements
When measuring an inside dimension where the hook can't reach (between two walls):
Set the 1-inch mark at one wall.
Read the dimension at the other wall.
Subtract 1 inch from the reading.
Or use a folding rule for inside dimensions.
Convert between fractions
Add: convert all to common denominator (e.g., 1/4 + 1/8 = 2/8 + 1/8 = 3/8).
Subtract: same.
Halve: simply double the denominator (1/4 → 1/8).
Or work in decimal inches if the math is involved (1/4 = 0.25, 3/8 = 0.375).
Mark accurately
Sharp pencil for fine marks.
Mark with a small V or arrow pointing to the line, not on the line (line is usually too thick).
Re-measure marked location to verify before cutting.
Verify by re-reading
Look at the mark, then look up the fraction.
Take a fresh look — common error is reading 5/16 as 3/16 or vice versa.
Always re-verify before cutting expensive material.
Common mistakes that cost you
- Reading the wrong mark. Confusing 5/16 with 3/16. Re-verify by counting from the inch mark.
- Hook deflection. Forcing the hook against the surface bends it. Push or hook lightly.
- Rounding when precision matters. 1/4 inch off in cabinetry = visible. Always read to the smallest mark for precision work.
- Misaligning tape. Tape angled = bad measurement. Pull straight.
- Bent or kinked tape. Replace tape; readings inaccurate around the bend.
