Before you start
Three things to settle:
1. The 4-to-1 rule (4:1 angle). Place ladder feet 1 ft away from the wall for every 4 ft of working ladder height. A 12 ft ladder reaching 12 ft of wall sits with feet 3 ft from the wall. Steeper than 4:1: ladder tips backward. Shallower: ladder kicks out at the bottom.
2. 3 ft above landing surface. If the ladder's landing on a roof: top of ladder must extend 3 ft above the roof edge so you can hold it while transitioning. Same for a balcony or window sill — extend 3 ft past.
3. Foot it or tie it. If working on the ladder for more than a few minutes: tie the top to the structure (anchor strap, rope through gutter or eyelet). Otherwise, have someone foot the bottom (stand on the lowest rung) when you climb. Don't leave a free-standing extension ladder with no top tie or foot.

Foot the ladder when climbing
While climbing or descending, have a helper stand on the lowest rung facing the ladder, weight on the rung. This prevents the ladder feet from kicking out.
If alone: tie the top before climbing. A free-standing extension ladder under load can shift suddenly.
Step-by-step instructions
Inspect ladder before each use
Rails: no dents, cracks, or splits.
Rungs: no loose or bent rungs.
Rope and pulley (extension mechanism): rope intact, pulley turns freely.
Locking dogs: spring-loaded locks engage on every rung.
Feet: rubber pads not worn smooth or cracked. Spike feet for soft soil if applicable.
Position ladder feet on level ground
Hard, level ground.
If on a slope: use ladder leveler attachments OR dig a small flat spot for the lower foot.
Avoid soft mulch, sand, ice — feet will sink unevenly.
Set the 4-to-1 angle
Estimate working ladder height (vertical distance to top of ladder).
Multiply by 0.25 = horizontal distance from wall.
Example: 16 ft ladder reaching 16 ft = feet 4 ft from wall.
Or: stand at the foot of the ladder, arms extended, palms on rung at shoulder height. Body should be straight (arms reach the rung). This is the 4:1 angle.
Extend ladder to working height
Pull rope to extend the upper section. Locking dogs click into rungs.
Confirm both locking dogs are engaged on the same rung before climbing.
Top of extended ladder should be 3 ft above the landing surface (roof edge, window sill, etc.).
Confirm 3 ft above landing
If the ladder ends below the landing: lengthen it or get a longer ladder.
If only 1-2 ft above: still climbing-only, with no easy hand-hold for transition.
Always 3 ft minimum extension past the landing.
Foot or tie before climbing
If with a helper: helper foots the ladder (stands on lowest rung).
If alone: tie the top to a solid anchor (gutter bracket, eyelet, fascia screw).
Anchor strap or rope around the top side rails of the ladder, secured to the structure.
Pre-installed eyelets or anchors save time on repeat work.
Use ladder stabilizers for gutters
Standoff arms (stabilizer) attach to the top of the ladder, span across the gutter so the ladder doesn't crush the gutter.
Also widens the contact area at the top — more stable.
Required for any gutter or fascia work.
Climb facing ladder, three points of contact
Always face the ladder when climbing up or down.
Three points of contact at all times.
Don't carry tools by hand — use tool belt or rope-bag.
Climb slowly.
Don't lean far to one side
Belt buckle stays between rails (same as step ladder rule).
If reach is needed to one side: descend, move the ladder, climb again.
Painting and gutter work: move ladder every 4-6 ft of horizontal work.
Descend carefully and store securely
Descend with same three-point rule.
On the ground, retract the ladder fully.
Store horizontal in garage; never leaning against an exterior wall (encourages climbers and weather damage).

- Wrong angle (too steep or too shallow). Steep: tips backward. Shallow: kicks out. Always 4:1.
- Insufficient extension above landing. Can't transition safely. Extend 3 ft past landing.
- Climbing alone with no tie or foot. Ladder shifts under load. Always tie or have a helper foot.
- Reaching past belt buckle. Tips ladder. Move it instead.
