How to Use a Cordless Drill Properly

Most tools have a 'right way' that takes 30 seconds to learn and saves you from countless mistakes. The DIY problem isn't the tool, it's the assumption that any tool can be used by feel.

A cordless drill is the single most-used power tool in any DIY project. Learning to use it correctly — beyond just pulling the trigger — separates polished results from stripped screws, split wood, and damaged work. The skill points are: bit selection, clutch settings, speed control, and when to switch between drill and impact-driver modes.

This guide covers cordless drills (the standard household tool). Impact drivers are similar but designed for higher-torque driving — covered separately.

Before you start

Three things to settle:

1. Voltage and brand. 12V drills: light-duty, household tasks. 18V or 20V max: standard residential, handles drilling and driving for most jobs. 36V or 40V: heavy-duty, contractor-grade. Stick with one brand (DeWalt, Milwaukee, Makita, Bosch) for battery interchange across multiple tools.

2. Bit selection. Use the bit type matched to material: standard twist bit for wood, brad-point bit for cleaner wood holes, masonry bit (with hammer mode) for concrete and brick, glass-and-tile bit for ceramic, step bit for sheet metal. Wrong bit = poor results and damaged bits.

3. Clutch and speed. Clutch settings (1-20 typically) control torque — higher numbers = more torque before clutch slips. Drill mode (drill icon) bypasses clutch for drilling holes. Speed (slider on top) controls RPM — high speed for drilling holes, low speed for driving screws.

Drill mode vs driver mode

The clutch icon (number 1-20) sets a torque limit — when the screw hits resistance, the clutch slips before the screw strips. Use for screwdriving.

The drill icon (typically the highest setting) bypasses the clutch entirely. The drill spins until you let off the trigger. Use for drilling holes only — never for screwdriving (will overdrive screws and strip threads).

Step-by-step instructions

Insert the correct bit

Open the chuck (twist counterclockwise). Insert the bit. Tighten the chuck (twist clockwise) firmly — the bit should not spin in the chuck.

Newer drills have keyless chucks — twist by hand. Older drills use a chuck key (small T-handle that turns the chuck).

Set the clutch and speed

For driving screws: set clutch to a low number (start at 5-7), speed to low (slider toward turtle).

For drilling holes: set to drill mode (icon), speed to high (slider toward rabbit).

Adjust based on material — softer wood needs lower clutch; hardwood needs higher.

Hold the drill correctly

Grip the handle firmly. Place your other hand on the drill's body or on the workpiece for stability.

Hold the drill perpendicular to the work surface. Angled drilling produces angled holes/screws.

Start slowly, then accelerate

Squeeze the trigger gently to start the bit spinning at low RPM. Once the bit is engaged in the material, accelerate to full RPM.

Starting at full speed causes the bit to skate across the material's surface, missing the target.

Apply consistent pressure

Press the bit into the material with steady pressure. Don't push so hard that the drill stalls; don't push so lightly that the bit doesn't bite.

Listen to the motor — high-pitched whine indicates too much pressure or wrong bit; smooth low-pitched cut indicates correct technique.

For drilling: keep the drill straight and let it cut

The bit removes material; pressure controls speed of removal. Excess pressure heats the bit and can damage it.

Pull the bit out periodically to clear chips/dust from the hole. Continuous deep drilling traps debris and overheats.

For driving: stop when the clutch slips

When the screw is fully driven, the clutch will slip — you'll hear a ratcheting sound. Stop pulling the trigger.

Continuing to drive after the clutch slips strips the screw or damages the workpiece.

Reverse to back out a screw or stuck bit

Use the reverse switch (typically a button or slider near the trigger) to spin the drill counterclockwise. Pull a screw out, free a stuck drill bit.

Forward = clockwise (driving in / drilling). Reverse = counterclockwise (backing out).

Drill or impact driver?

Drill: drilling holes, driving screws into softer materials.

Impact driver: high-torque screwdriving (long screws into hardwood, lag bolts). The impact mechanism delivers short pulses of high torque.

Have both for serious DIY. For lighter work, just a drill is sufficient.

Why does my battery die so fast?

Batteries naturally lose capacity over years. Lithium-ion batteries last 3-5 years before significant degradation.

If a 1-year-old battery dies fast, it may be defective — many manufacturers warranty for 2-3 years.

What clutch number should I use?

Start at 5-7 for drywall and softwood. 10-12 for hardwood. 15+ for hard fasteners or large screws.

If the clutch slips before the screw is fully driven, increase the number. If the screw strips, decrease the number.

When to call us instead

Quality cordless tools last decades. Cheap tools (the unbranded discount brands) fail quickly and waste money. Invest in one quality brand and stick with it for battery interchange.
