Cabinets are the part of a kitchen renovation where homeowners look at the install quote and think "how hard can it be?" The boxes show up on a pallet. The doors look identical. There is even a YouTube video.
It can be done, and done well. I know homeowners in Kanata and Barrhaven who installed their own IKEA kitchens and the results are fine. I also know homeowners who tried to install custom cabinets, ran into one wall that was a half inch out of plumb, and called us at week three with a kitchen full of un-shimmed boxes that nobody could close.
Here is the honest version of what cabinet install actually involves and where the line is.
IKEA versus custom: very different jobs
Most DIY cabinet success stories are IKEA. There is a reason. IKEA Sektion cabinets hang on a horizontal rail that is screwed to the wall once at the right height. Every box hooks onto the rail. The boxes are designed to be hung by amateurs. The system is forgiving of small wall imperfections because each box adjusts independently on the rail.
Custom cabinets, the kind a real cabinetmaker delivers in Ottawa, are usually a different beast. They come as finished boxes that have to be screwed into the studs through the back rail and tied to each other with cabinet screws through the side panels. The boxes have to be perfectly aligned, perfectly level across the run, and shimmed to compensate for the floor and walls. There is no rail doing the heavy lifting. Every box has to land on its own.
If your kitchen is IKEA: the install is a long weekend with a helper, and DIY is a real option.
If your kitchen is custom: the install is 3 to 5 days for a two-person crew with the right tools, and DIY is where most projects come off the rails.
What the install actually requires
Pretend you have already built up the courage. Here is what a real install demands, and where amateur jobs fail.
Wall preparation
The first hour is finding studs and locating obstacles. A stud finder, a tape, and a pencil. Mark every stud across every wall the cabinets touch. Mark the location of every electrical box, plumbing rough, gas line, and dryer vent.
Check the wall for plumb. Most Ottawa kitchens, even in newer builds in Stittsville, have walls that are a quarter to half an inch out of plumb at the top. The cabinets have to go up plumb. So you are working out, in advance, where the boxes will need shims behind them.
The level line
Find the highest point on the floor along the cabinet run. Measure up from there to the top of the base cabinets (typically 34.5 inches). Strike a level line across the entire wall. Every base cabinet hangs from this line. The floor goes wherever the floor goes; the cabinets are flat.
This is where DIY installs most often go sideways. The homeowner uses a 4-foot level to set the first cabinet, gets it level, then sets the next cabinet level off the first. A 4-foot level reads slightly off across an 8-foot run. By cabinet four, the run is leaning a quarter inch downhill. The countertop will reveal it. The shaker doors will hang crooked. The dishwasher will sit at an angle.
The fix is to use a laser level (a Bosch GLL is the common choice) or a string line stretched the full length of the run and snap a chalk line. Set every cabinet to the line, not to its neighbour.
Hanging the uppers first
Pros hang the wall cabinets first when the floor is empty. There is no leaning over base cabinets. There is no risk of dropping a box on your toe. The wall cabinets hang from a 1x4 ledger board temporarily screwed to the wall at the right height; the cabinets sit on the ledger while you screw them into the studs.
Then you set the bases. Then you tie everything together.
The 1/4-inch tolerance that breaks everything
This is the number every cabinet installer carries in their head. A run of cabinets has to be level, plumb, and aligned within about 1/8 inch over the entire length. That sounds tight, and it is. The reason is the doors and drawers.
Cabinet doors are typically set with a 3 mm reveal (about 1/8 inch) between them. If two adjacent boxes are misaligned by 1/4 inch, the reveal between their doors goes to zero on one side and 1/4 inch on the other. Every door looks crooked. Every drawer front does too. The eye picks it up immediately even if it cannot articulate why the kitchen looks off.
This is the failure mode I see most often on DIY custom installs. Each box was "close enough" by itself. The cumulative error across 12 boxes is half an inch and the doors all look wrong.
The shim test
Before you screw any cabinet into the wall, dry-fit it against the level line and check the gap behind it at the top. If the gap varies more than 1/4 inch from one side to the other, the wall is out of plumb and you need to shim before you fasten. If you screw the box in tight without shimming, the box pulls into the wall's bow and the doors will never hang straight. This is the single most ignored step in amateur installs.
Stacking and tying
Adjacent boxes get clamped together at the front face frames (or front edges, on frameless boxes), shimmed to perfect alignment, then screwed together with cabinet screws. The screws go through the side panels in two places, top and bottom, and they pull the boxes into one continuous run.
Skip this step (or use drywall screws, which are not the same thing) and the run looks like a row of separate boxes instead of a continuous kitchen. The countertop guy will charge extra to template a run that is misaligned at the seams.
Tools you actually need
People underestimate the tool list. Here is the real one for a custom cabinet install:
- A laser level or a 6-foot level, not a 2-foot level
- A stud finder that actually works (Franklin ProSensor M210 is the one that does)
- A drill and an impact driver, with a long Phillips bit and a long #2 square bit
- A right-angle drill attachment for the inside corners
- Cabinet clamps (face-frame clamps if frame, edge clamps if frameless)
- A roll of cedar shims and a utility knife to score them
- An assortment of cabinet screws (#8 x 2.5 inch washer-head for stud fastening, #8 x 1.25 inch for box-to-box)
- A jigsaw or oscillating tool for cutting the back of the sink base around plumbing rough-ins
- A trim router for end-panel scribing
If you don't own most of this, the cost of the tools eats most of the savings.
What drives the pro install cost in Ottawa
Cabinet install labour in Ottawa is typically priced by the linear foot of cabinet run, scaled by complexity. A standard 12-foot kitchen with an island is a moderate install. The labour covers scribing the end panels, fitting the crown moulding, dealing with the gable next to the fridge, and aligning everything to the wall and floor.
Custom kitchens with full-height cabinets, glass doors, light rails, integrated appliances, or curved islands take far more labour, which is the main cost driver.
If you DIY the install correctly and avoid the cumulative-error trap, you save the install labour entirely. If you DIY incorrectly, the cabinetmaker may not warranty the doors and drawers (most reserve the right to void the warranty if the boxes are not installed plumb and level), and you may end up paying to have the install corrected before the countertop fabricator can template. The cabinets carry the impression of the kitchen for the next twenty years. Crooked doors are not a "we'll fix it later" item. Either install them right or pay somebody who will.
Our honest recommendation
If you are doing IKEA and you have a square room, plumb walls, and a friend who can hold the other end of a level line, install it yourself. Save the install fee and put it into a better quartz top. The Sektion system is forgiving and the result will be fine.
If you are doing custom cabinets, real wood, frameless or face-frame, in a typical Ottawa kitchen with a wall that is 1/2 inch out of plumb, hire the install. The cost is not where the savings are in a kitchen renovation. The savings are in cabinet selection, layout decisions, and not over-spending on appliances. The install is where bad work shows up forever.
The honest line: if your kitchen is going to look like a magazine, hire the magazine install. If your kitchen is going to look like a rental flip, do whatever you want.
