Three things to settle:
1. Cutting joists requires headering. Most attic stair units are wider than 16 inches between joists — meaning at least one joist must be cut. The cut joist must be supported by a header (perpendicular framing piece) attached to the adjacent intact joists. Wrong header sizing causes ceiling sag.
2. Ceiling height matters. Standard ceiling stairs need 8-9 ft of total swing clearance below (for the open ladder to extend). Verify clearance from ceiling location to opposite floor. Too close to wall: stair won't fully extend.
3. Insulated cover (energy). Plain attic stairs leak heat — a major energy loss. Modern units have R-6 to R-10 insulation built in, with weatherstripping. Or buy insulated cover separately. Critical for energy efficiency.

Step-by-step instructions
Locate ceiling joists and plan opening
Find ceiling joists with stud finder. Mark direction.
Standard joists 16 inches OC.
Stair unit (22.5 inches wide typical) requires cutting at least one joist.
Plan opening location: needs 8-9 ft clear floor space below for ladder swing.
Mark the opening on the ceiling
Stair manufacturer's rough opening dimensions: typically 22.5 × 54 inches.
Mark on ceiling drywall.
Position parallel to joists (long dimension parallel to joist direction).
Verify no obstructions in attic
Climb into attic.
Check above planned opening: no electrical, ductwork, plumbing in the way.
Move obstructions if needed before cutting.
Verify rafters or trusses don't conflict.
Cut ceiling drywall on opening lines
Score and cut drywall on the four sides of the opening.
Drywall saw or reciprocating saw.
Drop drywall pieces; clean up.
Joists now visible in opening.
Cut intercepting joist
Joist running across the opening: cut at the opening edges.
Reciprocating saw with metal-cutting blade.
Caution: support cut piece before final cut to prevent fall.
Remove cut joist section.
Install header to support cut joist
Header: 2× lumber matching joist depth (e.g., 2×8 if joists are 2×8).
Cut to fit between two intact joists at right angle to cut.
Two headers needed: one at each end of the cut, perpendicular to the original joist direction.
Joist hangers attach header to intact joists.
Cut joist section attaches to header with joist hanger.
Verify all hardware is rated for ceiling joist load.
Position stair unit in opening
Lift stair unit into opening from below (with helper).
Position with hinges aligned to one short side of opening.
Verify unit is plumb and level.
Stair unit has a top frame that rests on the ceiling joist edges.
Anchor stair unit to framing
Drive screws through unit's mounting flanges into joists and headers.
Per manufacturer's pattern (typically 4-6 screws minimum).
Verify unit is secure and operates smoothly.
Add insulation around opening
Stuff batt insulation between joists and the stair frame to seal gaps.
Spray foam can for small gaps.
Reduces draft and heat loss into attic.
Install ceiling trim
Trim around the stair unit's frame for finished look.
Match to existing ceiling moulding.
Brad nail in place.
Test stair operation
Lower the stair fully.
Verify it extends fully and locks in place.
Climb up; verify weight rating.
Close: stair retracts smoothly into ceiling.
Common mistakes that cost you
- Skipping the header. Cut joist sags, ceiling cracks. Always header.
- Wrong size for ceiling clearance. Ladder won't fully extend. Verify swing clearance.
- No insulation around opening. Major heat loss. Always seal gaps.
- Cutting wrong joist. Damages structural joist. Verify joist locations before cutting.
- Forcing stair operation. Damages spring or hinge. If stair binds, adjust per manufacturer.
