How to Install a Dishwasher

Plumbing swaps go wrong when people rush the shut-off and torque step. Take an extra two minutes shutting things down properly and you eliminate 80% of the failures we get called to fix.

Advanced 2–4 hr

Dishwasher installation involves three trades: plumbing (water supply and drain), electrical (power connection), and cabinet fitting. The job is genuinely 2-4 hours for a like-for-like replacement (existing dishwasher being replaced) and substantially longer for a new installation in a previously unwired/unplumbed cabinet.

This guide covers a standard 24-inch built-in dishwasher replacing an existing unit with all utilities already in place. New installations require permits for the electrical and plumbing work and are best handled by professionals.

Before you start

Three things to settle:

1. Three utilities required. Dishwasher needs: water supply (hot, typically 1/2 inch braided hose), drain connection (to sink drain or garbage disposal, typically 5/8 inch flexible drain hose), and power (120V, dedicated 15A or 20A circuit). All three must be in place before installation. Like-for-like replacement uses existing connections; new installation requires roughing in all three.

2. Air gap or high loop. Drain connection requires an air gap to prevent contaminated drain water from siphoning back into the dishwasher. Two methods: an air gap fitting on the counter (visible chrome cylinder with a small cap, code-required in some jurisdictions) or a high loop (drain hose looped up to the underside of the counter and secured, then back down to the drain). Verify Ontario code preference for your area.

3. Cabinet space and connections. Most dishwashers are 24 inches wide. Verify cabinet opening is between 23-3/4 and 24-1/4 inches. Verify plumbing and electrical are accessible from inside the cabinet (typical) or from the side (requires routing through cabinet walls).

  • Bucket and old towels
  • Voltage tester

  • New dishwasher (built-in, 24-inch)
  • Replacement supply line (braided stainless steel, 1/2 inch hot)
  • Drain hose (typically included with dishwasher)
  • Plumber's tape (Teflon)
  • Wire nuts (for electrical connections)
  • Anti-tip bracket (if not included)
  • Insulation panels (most modern dishwashers include these)

Turn off water and power before starting

Dishwasher install touches both plumbing and electrical. Always turn off the water supply at the dishwasher's hot supply valve (under the sink) and turn off the breaker for the dishwasher circuit before starting work.

Verify with a voltage tester that the power is off before touching electrical connections.

Step-by-step instructions

Disconnect existing dishwasher utilities

Turn off the dishwasher's hot water supply valve (under the kitchen sink, typically). Turn off the breaker.

Disconnect the supply line from the dishwasher's water inlet (under the unit, accessed by removing the kick plate).

Disconnect the drain hose from the sink drain or disposal.

Disconnect the electrical (typically a junction box on the dishwasher's underside or back).

Remove the existing dishwasher

Most built-in dishwashers are anchored to the underside of the counter with two screws (top brackets) or to adjacent cabinets with side brackets. Unscrew.

Adjust leveling feet to lower the unit. Slide the dishwasher out of the cabinet opening.

The unit should slide out smoothly. If it sticks, check for additional anchor points or a not-fully-disconnected utility.

Inspect the cabinet opening

Check cabinet sides for damage, the floor of the cabinet for water staining (indicates previous leaks), and the existing utility connections for condition.

Replace any damaged supply line, valve, or drain fitting before installing the new unit.

Prep the new dishwasher

Open the new dishwasher's installation kit. Most include: drain hose, supply line connectors, wiring access cover, anti-tip brackets.

Per the manufacturer's instructions, attach the supply line to the dishwasher's water inlet using included connectors. Apply Teflon tape on threads.

Connect electrical (with power off)

Verify the breaker is off and tested with a voltage tester.

Open the dishwasher's electrical junction box (usually on the underside front).

Connect: black to black (hot), white to white (neutral), green or bare to ground.

Use wire nuts. Pull-test connections.

Slide dishwasher into the cabinet opening

Position drain hose, supply line, and electrical cable so they can extend through the cabinet to the sink area as the dishwasher slides in.

Slowly slide the dishwasher into the opening. Adjust leveling feet to set the height (top of unit should align with underside of counter).

Verify the unit is level — front-to-back and side-to-side.

Connect water supply

Connect the supply line to the hot water shut-off valve under the sink. Hand-tight plus a quarter to half turn with a wrench.

Open the supply valve. Check for leaks at the supply line connections — both at the dishwasher and at the shut-off valve.

Connect drain hose with high loop or air gap

Run the drain hose from the dishwasher to the sink drain area.

High loop method: secure the drain hose to the underside of the counter with a bracket, with the loop's apex above the dishwasher's drain inlet. Then route the hose down to the sink drain or disposal.

Air gap method: route through an air gap fitting on the counter, then to the drain. Air gap is visible on the counter (chrome cylinder).

Verify the connection at the sink drain is secure with a hose clamp.

Anchor the dishwasher to the counter

Most dishwashers have two top brackets that screw to the underside of the counter. Drive screws to anchor the unit.

Some installations use side brackets attached to adjacent cabinets — equivalent purpose.

Restore power and run a test cycle

Turn the breaker back on. Run an empty cycle on the dishwasher.

Check for: water filling correctly, drain emptying properly at end of cycle, no leaks at any connection.

If any issues, cycle again or troubleshoot the specific symptom.

Replace the kick plate

Snap the kick plate (the cover at the bottom front of the dishwasher) into place. The kick plate hides the leveling feet and any visible connections.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a permit?

Like-for-like replacement: typically no. New installation: depends on whether new electrical or plumbing work is needed. New circuit: ESA permit. New plumbing: plumbing permit.

If plumbing and electrical are already roughed-in, no permit needed for the dishwasher itself.

Can I share electrical with other appliances?

No. Dishwashers should be on a dedicated 120V, 15A or 20A circuit. Sharing with disposal or microwave can trip breakers and is non-code in most jurisdictions.

If your existing dishwasher shares a circuit, fix this with the install — separate dedicated circuits per major appliance.

Why does my dishwasher leak?

Common causes: loose supply line connection, drain hose not secured at sink connection, dishwasher door gasket worn (typical at 5+ years), air gap clogged.

Identify the leak source with a test cycle and visual inspection. Most leaks are at hose connections — re-seat or tighten.
