How to Install a GFCI Outlet

GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) outlets are a life-safety device. They detect ground faults — when current escapes the intended circuit (through a person, through water) — and cut power within 25 milliseconds. The Ontario Building Code requires GFCI protection in kitchens, bathrooms, basements with concrete floors, garages, outdoor outlets, and any outlet within 1.5 metres of a sink. Failure to provide GFCI in these locations is a code violation.

This guide covers a like-for-like GFCI replacement (replacing an existing outlet with a GFCI) or upgrading a standard outlet to GFCI. Both are within DIY range with proper procedure.

Before you start

Three things to settle:

1. Where GFCIs are required. Per Canadian Electrical Code: kitchen counter outlets, bathroom outlets, basement outlets where concrete floors are present, garage outlets, outdoor outlets, and any outlet within 1.5 m of a sink. New installations require AFCI (arc fault) protection in bedrooms in addition. Existing homes without GFCI in required locations are not retroactively forced to upgrade — but most homeowners do upgrade for safety.

2. Line vs Load distinction. GFCI outlets have two pairs of terminals: LINE (where power comes in) and LOAD (where power goes out to other outlets downstream). The LINE terminals power the GFCI itself. The LOAD terminals power any outlets installed downstream from this GFCI — those downstream outlets are also GFCI-protected. Wiring LINE and LOAD reversed makes the GFCI non-functional even though it appears to work.

3. Test/Reset functionality. Every GFCI has TEST and RESET buttons. Pressing TEST cuts power; pressing RESET restores it. The mechanism should be tested monthly to confirm the GFCI still functions. Failed GFCIs (won't reset, won't trip on TEST) need immediate replacement — they no longer provide protection.

  • GFCI outlet (15A or 20A matching circuit)
  • Wire nuts (sized for wire gauge)
  • Electrical tape
  • GFCI cover plate (special cutout — Decora-style)

LINE/LOAD wiring is the #1 install mistake

GFCIs only work when wired correctly. Connect the incoming power wires to LINE terminals; connect any downstream outlet wires to LOAD terminals.

If wired backwards (incoming to LOAD): the GFCI receives no power and the outlet appears dead. Or worse, it appears to work but doesn't actually provide ground-fault protection. Always read the GFCI's labels and confirm LINE vs LOAD before connecting.

Step-by-step instructions

Identify the breaker and verify off

Switch off the breaker for the outlet's circuit. Test by trying any device plugged in — should be dead.

Use a non-contact voltage tester at the outlet location after removing the cover. Confirm no voltage before touching wires.

Identify line and load wires

Most outlets have either:

Photograph and disconnect the existing outlet

Take a clear photo of the existing wiring before disconnecting.

Disconnect each wire — backstab releases or terminal-screw loosening as appropriate.

Connect wires to the new GFCI

Connect to LINE terminals first:

Mount and cover

Push GFCI into box. Drive mount screws.

Install the GFCI cover plate (Decora-style with rectangular cutout).

Restore power

Switch breaker back on. The GFCI should be in 'reset' (active) state. If 'tripped,' press RESET.

Test the GFCI's function

Press TEST button. Power should cut off — the GFCI's indicator changes (button position or LED).

Press RESET. Power restores.

If TEST/RESET doesn't work, the wiring is wrong (likely LINE/LOAD reversed). Power off, recheck wiring against package diagram, fix.

Test downstream outlets (if applicable)

If the GFCI is mid-circuit with LOAD wiring, test the downstream outlets:

Test monthly going forward

Press TEST monthly to verify the GFCI still functions. If it doesn't trip, the GFCI has failed internally and needs replacement.

Failed GFCIs no longer provide protection but appear to work — the only way to catch this is the TEST button.

Can one GFCI protect multiple outlets?

Yes. The GFCI's LOAD terminals feed downstream outlets, all of which are GFCI-protected. Multiple outlets can share one GFCI as long as wired correctly.

This is cheaper than installing a GFCI at every outlet — only the first one in the circuit needs to be a GFCI; the rest can be standard outlets fed from the LOAD terminals.

Why does my GFCI keep tripping?

Three causes: ground fault present (something is leaking current to ground — often a damaged appliance), GFCI is too sensitive (older units sometimes trip on minor leakage), or moisture in the outlet box.

Unplug everything and reset — if it stays reset, an appliance was the cause. If it trips with nothing plugged in, the GFCI itself or the wiring has a fault.

When to call us instead

If you're upgrading multiple outlets to GFCI, dealing with old 2-wire (no ground) installations, or working on circuits in a panel, hire a licensed electrician. ESA permits and inspections required for most non-trivial outlet work.
