Replacing an existing electrical outlet (receptacle) is genuinely an Intermediate-to-Advanced DIY job. The wires are 14-12 gauge solid copper, the connections are screw terminals or backstab holes, and the safety procedure is non-negotiable: turn off the breaker, verify with a voltage tester, then work. In Ontario, the Electrical Safety Authority allows homeowners to do their own electrical work but requires permits for new outlet installations and most modifications beyond like-for-like replacement.
This guide covers a like-for-like duplex outlet replacement (most common scenario). New outlet installation is a different scope requiring permits and is more involved.
Before you start
Three things to settle:
1. Permit requirements. Like-for-like residential outlet replacement (replacing a duplex outlet with the same type, no wire changes) does not typically require an ESA permit. Replacing standard with GFCI, replacing 15A with 20A, adding new outlets, or running new wiring requires a permit. When uncertain, call ESA. Working without required permits voids home insurance for any related claim.
2. Outlet type. Standard duplex (two outlets on one body): the residential default. GFCI: required by code in kitchens, bathrooms, basements with concrete floors, garages, outdoor outlets. AFCI: required in bedrooms in newer Ontario installations. Tamper-resistant: required in homes with children. Match the new outlet to the existing OR upgrade according to current code.
3. 15A vs 20A. Standard household circuits are 15A. Some kitchen counter outlets and dedicated appliance circuits are 20A. The amp rating must match the circuit's wire gauge: 14-gauge wire = 15A breaker = 15A outlet. 12-gauge = 20A. Don't put a 20A outlet on a 15A circuit (overloading risk) or vice versa.

Backstab connections vs side-screw terminals
Cheap outlets allow wires to be 'backstabbed' — pushed into a small hole behind the outlet rather than wrapped around side-screw terminals. Backstab connections are unreliable: they loosen over time, arc, and cause electrical fires.
Always use side-screw terminals for connections. The wire wraps around the terminal screw and the screw clamps the wire. This is the standard for professional installations.
Step-by-step instructions
Identify the breaker
At the main electrical panel, find the breaker labelled for the room or specific outlet. Switch it off.
Test by plugging a lamp into the outlet — should not work. If it still works, you've turned off the wrong breaker.
Verify with a voltage tester
Remove the outlet cover plate. Hold a non-contact voltage tester near each terminal of the existing outlet. Tester should not light up or beep.
If voltage is detected, find the correct breaker. Don't proceed assuming the tester is wrong.
Remove the existing outlet
Unscrew the outlet from the box (typically two screws). Pull the outlet out, with wires still attached.
Inspect the wires — note connections, colours, and condition. Take a photo for reference.
Disconnect the wires
Loosen each terminal screw and pull the wire free. If wires are backstabbed, insert a small flathead into the release slot to free each wire — pulling without releasing damages the wire end.
Examine the bare copper. If tarnished, oxidized, or damaged, strip a fresh 5/8 inch of insulation off.
Connect wires to the new outlet using side terminals
Standard duplex outlet wiring:
- Black (hot) to brass-coloured screws. If two black wires (line and load), one to each brass screw.
- White (neutral) to silver-coloured screws. If two white wires, one to each silver screw.
- Bare copper or green (ground) to green screw.
Pro tip: loop each wire clockwise around its terminal screw, then tighten the screw. Clockwise direction means the wire pulls into the screw as it tightens. Counterclockwise pushes wire out. Tighten firmly; pull-test each wire.
Push outlet into box
Fold wires neatly into the back of the box. Position the new outlet in the box opening with terminal screws facing the back.
If wires are too long to fold cleanly, you can shorten with wire cutters and re-strip. Don't force a tangled mess into a small box — that's how connections come loose.
Mount and verify
Drive the two outlet-mount screws to secure the outlet to the box. The outlet should sit flush with the wall surface.
Re-install the cover plate.
Restore power and test
Switch the breaker back on. Test the outlet with a plug-in voltage tester (the type that plugs in and lights up to confirm correct wiring).
Verify both outlets work, with hot/neutral/ground correctly. The plug-in tester shows green for correct wiring, various colours for issues (reversed polarity, missing ground, etc.).
If installing a GFCI: test the GFCI function
If the outlet is a GFCI, press the TEST button — power should cut off, the indicator should change.
Press RESET — power restores. If TEST/RESET doesn't work, the wiring is wrong (line/load reversed). Re-check connections per the GFCI's wiring diagram.
Common mistakes that cost you
- Backstab connections. Loosen over time, arc, cause fires. Always use side-screw terminals.
- Reversed polarity (hot on neutral). Some appliances work but the chassis becomes live — shock risk. Use a plug-in tester to verify wiring.
- Wrong amp rating outlet. 20A on 15A circuit overloads the wire. Always match outlet rating to wire gauge.
- Working live. Always confirm power off with a tester. Working live causes serious injuries every year in Canada.
- Not grounding. Some older 2-wire installations don't have ground. New 3-prong outlets require ground connection — installing without grounds creates shock hazard.

Do I need a permit?
Like-for-like replacement: typically no. Adding new outlets, replacing standard with GFCI in some applications, or running new wiring: yes — ESA permit required.

Why does my outlet have white wires connected to brass screws?

What if there's no ground wire?
Older homes (pre-1970s in Canada) often have 2-wire installations with no ground. You have three options: install a GFCI outlet (legal substitute for ground per CEC for 2-wire installations), have an electrician run new grounded wiring, or replace with a 2-prong (non-grounded) outlet (legal but limits what you can plug in).
Don't fake a ground by connecting the ground screw to the neutral — this creates serious safety risks.
