Before you start
Three things to settle:
1. Counter material determines DIY feasibility. Solid surface (Corian) and laminate counters: undermount possible with DIY clips. Stone (granite, quartz, marble): cutout must be precisely made at fabrication; sink mounted with epoxy at fabrication shop. Adding undermount to existing stone counter is not DIY-friendly.
2. Sink and counter cutout must match. Each undermount sink has specific cutout dimensions. The cutout must be exactly per the sink's spec — too small means the sink doesn't fit; too large means visible counter exposed at the sink rim.
3. Plumbing connections. Undermount install includes drain assembly, garbage disposal (if used), and water supply. Plan plumbing before mounting the sink.

Stone counters: hire a fabricator
Granite, quartz, and marble counters require precise cutout work using diamond-blade tools and specialty mounting (epoxy, plus stainless mounting bolts) that are well beyond standard DIY tools.
If you have stone counters, hire a stone fabricator for the sink install. The cost depends on the counter material, the sink size, and the labour to cut and seal the opening; ask for a written quote if you've already purchased the sink.
Step-by-step instructions
Verify counter cutout matches sink
Most undermount sinks come with a paper template showing the cutout dimensions.
Lay the template over the existing cutout. Should match exactly — the sink's outer rim sits 1/4 inch beyond the cutout on all sides.
Mismatched cutouts mean modifying the cutout (significant work for non-stone) or returning the sink.
Test fit the sink
From below the counter, lift the sink up into position. The sink's outer rim should contact the counter's underside around the entire cutout.
Verify clearance for plumbing connections (drain, supply lines, disposal). Confirm cabinet space accommodates sink depth.
Install the drain assembly
With the sink upside down, install the drain assembly per its instructions. Apply plumber's putty around the drain flange.
Tighten the drain's locking nut from below. Don't over-tighten.
Apply silicone bead around sink rim
Apply a continuous bead of 100% silicone caulk around the top edge of the sink (the rim that will meet the counter underside).
The silicone seals the joint and acts as an additional adhesive.
Lift sink into position
With your helper, lift the sink up to the counter underside. Press firmly to engage the silicone.
The sink should sit flush against the counter, with the rim contacting evenly around the entire cutout.
Install undermount clips
Most undermount sinks include 4-8 mounting clips that secure the sink to the counter underside.
Clips screw into pre-drilled holes in the counter (or are epoxied for stone) and have a flange that grips the sink's outer rim.
Tighten clips alternately around the sink — quarter turns in pattern — until snug. The sink should feel solidly held.
Wipe excess silicone
From above (looking down into the sink and at the counter), wipe any silicone that squeezed out during install.
A wet finger or damp cloth removes silicone before it cures.
Connect plumbing
Install the faucet (or reconnect existing) per its instructions.
Connect drain to the home's drain plumbing. Install P-trap.
Connect water supply lines (hot and cold) from shut-off valves to faucet.
Test for leaks
Restore water. Run faucet at full flow and watch sink-to-counter joint for any leaks.
Fill the sink and let drain — verify drain seal holds.
Check under the sink at all plumbing connections.
24-hour cure
Don't fill the sink with heavy load for 24 hours while silicone fully cures.
Light use is fine; just avoid stress on the sink-to-counter joint until silicone is fully bonded.
Common mistakes that cost you
- Stone counter without fabricator. DIY undermount on granite/quartz/marble is extremely difficult. Hire a fabricator.
- Wrong cutout dimensions. Sink doesn't fit or counter shows. Verify before installing.
- Not applying silicone bead. Sink-counter joint leaks; sink may pull free. Always seal with silicone during install.
- Over-tightening clips. Damages counter or distorts sink rim. Snug only — alternating pattern.
- No leak test. Hidden leaks rot cabinet over months. Always test before finishing install.
Frequently asked questions
Can I install undermount on laminate?
Yes, but with limitations. Laminate counters typically require special mounting (drop-in style or specific undermount clips). Verify counter type accepts undermount before purchasing.
Most laminate is too thin and flexible to support an undermount sink reliably. Solid surface (Corian) or stone is preferred.
How long does the silicone need to cure?
100% silicone cures fully in 24 hours. Light use of the sink is fine immediately; heavy loads should wait.
If sink is exposed to water immediately during use (as is typical), water doesn't affect cure of properly-applied silicone.
What's better: undermount or drop-in?
