Trim is the test that separates a homeowner who watched a few YouTube videos from a finish carpenter. The geometry looks easy. The cuts are obvious. Anything that doesn't fit perfectly can be filled with caulk and painted over.
That last sentence is exactly why DIY trim looks bad. The rest of the room is square, painted, finished. The trim is the framing for everything else, and the eye locks onto every gap, every overcut, every joint that's slightly off. A 1/16 inch gap at an inside corner reads as a black line from across the room, even after caulk.
Trim is the most direct test of whether you have any patience for finish work. Here are the four skills that decide whether your trim looks installed by a pro or installed by somebody trying to finish in a weekend.
Coping inside corners (the skill DIYers skip)
Inside corners are where two pieces of baseboard meet at an inside angle, like in the corner of a square room. The wrong way to do this is two 45-degree miters that meet at the corner. The right way is coping.
Why miters fail at inside corners:
- Walls are never perfectly 90 degrees. They're 89 or 91 or 88. A perfect 45+45 miter only works on a perfect 90-degree corner.
- Wood moves with humidity. Even if the miter starts tight, the joint opens over the seasons.
- The miter joint has wood-to-wood contact across a thin sliver of cut surface. As the corner opens, the gap shows from across the room.
The cope: the first piece of baseboard butts square against the corner wall (square cut, flat against the wall). The second piece is cut to wrap around the profile of the first. You cut a 45-degree miter on the second piece (creating an exposed profile), then use a coping saw to cut along the back edge of the profile, removing the wood behind the visible face.
The result: the second piece's profile butts up tight against the face of the first piece. The cope hides the wall angle entirely. If the corner is 88 degrees instead of 90, the cope still fits because it's keying off the visible profile, not the wall geometry. Joints stay tight as wood moves.
Coping takes practice. Most apprentice finish carpenters spend two weeks getting decent at it. For a DIY first try, plan to cut three or four practice pieces before you cut the real ones. A coping saw is an inexpensive tool. The skill is what matters.
The coping shortcut: pre-cut at 45 degrees on the saw
Cutting the cope by hand with a coping saw works but it's slow. The shortcut: cut the piece on a miter saw at 45 degrees first (creating the visible profile line on the cut surface), THEN use the coping saw to follow that profile line and back-cut behind it. The saw line gives you a track to follow. Hold the saw at a slight angle (back-cutting 5-10 degrees) so the front edge of the cope is the only part touching the adjacent piece. Sand the cope edge with a sanding sponge to remove fuzzies. Test fit. Adjust with a rasp where needed.
Mitering outside corners
Outside corners (where the wall sticks out, like at a door jamb to a hallway) are mitered, not coped. Two 45-degree cuts meet at the corner.
The mistake: cutting both 45s on a chop saw set to 45 and assuming the corner is 90. It almost never is. New construction is closer (within 1 degree). Older Ottawa homes can be 2 to 3 degrees off square at any given outside corner.
The fix: measure the actual corner angle first. Use a digital angle finder or two scrap pieces of baseboard butted against the corner with a known reference (try fitting two 45s and see which side has the gap). Adjust the miter saw to half the actual angle. So if the corner is 92 degrees, set the saw to 46 degrees on each side.
For outside corners, glue the miter face with wood glue and use 23-gauge pin nails through the joint to lock it together. The glue holds the joint tight long-term. Without glue, the miter opens as wood moves.
Pre-finish the cuts. After cutting, fill any pin holes with wood filler, sand smooth, and touch up paint or stain on the cut surface before installation. Doing this after install is much harder.
Scribing: the skill for old Ottawa walls
Older houses in Ottawa (Glebe, Hintonburg, Sandy Hill, Old Ottawa South) often have walls that look flat at first glance and are actually wavy. Plaster on lath builds up unevenly. Studs bow. Drywall over old framing follows the framing's irregularities.
When a perfectly straight piece of baseboard meets a wavy wall, you get gaps in some spots and contact in others. Caulk hides small gaps but not big ones. The fix is scribing: marking the wall's profile onto the back edge of the trim and cutting the trim to match.
The scribe technique:
- Hold the trim against the wall in its final position.
- Set a compass (or a small piece of wood with a pencil at the edge) to the maximum gap distance.
- Run the compass point along the wall while the pencil traces along the trim's back edge.
- Cut along the pencil line with a jigsaw, back-cut at 5-10 degrees so only the front edge contacts the wall.
- Test fit. The front edge now matches the wall's irregularity exactly.
Scribing is only needed where the gap is more than 1/16 inch. Smaller gaps get caulked. Decide which is which before cutting. Don't scribe a piece that doesn't need it (you weaken the wood unnecessarily).
Nailing: into studs, not just drywall
Trim has to be nailed into framing, not just into drywall. Drywall alone won't hold trim long-term. The nails pull through, the trim pops off the wall, and within 2 years the corners are gapping at the floor.
The wall-and-floor framing for nailing baseboard:
- The bottom plate of the wall is a 2x4 running horizontal at floor level. Nail into this plate. Nails should hit the plate at the bottom 1 inch of the baseboard.
- The wall studs are vertical 2x4s on 16-inch centres. Nail into these for the upper portion of taller baseboards.
- For 5 1/4 inch or taller baseboard, you should hit both the bottom plate and a stud at every nail location.
Use a stud finder or tap to locate studs. Mark them with light pencil before installing. Use 15-gauge or 16-gauge finish nails (2 to 2.5 inch) for nailing through baseboard into framing. 18-gauge brad nails are too thin to hold long-term.
For walls where the baseboard runs along a wall with no studs at convenient spots (the bottom plate alone won't hold a tall baseboard), use construction adhesive on the back of the trim in addition to the nails. The adhesive bonds to the drywall and acts as a permanent secondary fastener.
Why the second-day finish trim looks bad
Most DIY trim jobs look fine on the day they're installed. They look bad two weeks later. Here's why:
Wood movement. MDF and pine baseboard come from the home center at whatever moisture content the warehouse holds. Once installed in your house, they shift to your indoor humidity. Joints that were tight on day one open by 1/32 inch by week two. Coped joints handle this. Mitered inside corners do not.
Settling. The hardware shifts as the house breathes. Nails work slightly loose. Trim that was pressed tight to the wall pulls back by 1/32 inch in spots. Where there was a hairline contact, there's now a hairline gap.
Caulk shrinkage. Acrylic caulk shrinks as it cures. A bead that filled a gap on day one is depressed below the surface by week two. Apply caulk in two thin coats, letting the first cure 24 hours, instead of one thick bead.
Paint flashing. Touch-up paint on caulked or filled areas dries to a different sheen than the bulk paint. Repaint the whole baseboard once everything is filled, sanded, and caulked, not just the touched-up spots.
The difference between trim that looks installed and trim that looks finished is three skills: coping, scribing, and a coat of paint applied after everything has been filled and caulked, not before.
Tools that actually matter
For a DIY trim job, the tool list:
- Compound miter saw with a sharp 80-tooth or 100-tooth carbide blade (the cheap blade that comes with the saw is for framing, not finish trim)
- Coping saw with a fine blade (15-20 TPI)
- 15-gauge or 16-gauge finish nailer (cordless or pneumatic)
- 23-gauge pin nailer for outside miter joints
- Stud finder
- 4-foot level
- Digital angle finder (helpful, not essential)
- Sanding sponges (220 and 320 grit)
- Caulk gun and high-quality paintable acrylic caulk (DAP Alex Plus or similar)
- Wood filler (DAP Plastic Wood for visible spots, lightweight spackle for nail holes)
Skip the cheap pine baseboard from the home center. The grain raises after painting, the corners chip during install, and it never looks as crisp as MDF or finger-jointed pine. MDF baseboard is the right product for a paint-grade finish, and the linear footage drives the material allowance more than the per-foot rate.
When to call a finish carpenter
For a single room, especially a small one with simple geometry, DIY trim is a worthwhile project for a careful homeowner. Plan a full weekend per room.
For a whole-house trim project, especially with crown moulding or any stained (not painted) trim, a finish carpenter pays for themselves. Stained trim shows every gap (no caulk is going to hide it), and crown moulding requires compound miter cuts that are unforgiving. A pro carpenter trims a typical Ottawa house (part of a whole-home renovation scope) in a few days. Doing it yourself is doable but it's a 3-week project for a first-timer.
