3. Different blades for different materials. Wood, metal, masonry, tile, and laminate each have purpose-built blades. Don't use a wood blade in metal or you'll dull it in seconds. Match blade material rating to workpiece.

Match blade kerf to saw arbor

Arbor: shaft size on the saw. Most circular saws are 5/8 inch. Verify before purchasing — wrong arbor = blade doesn't fit.

Blade diameter: 7.25 inch typical for circular saws; 10 or 12 inch for mitre saws.

Inspect blade before installing
Carbide tips intact (no missing teeth).
No bend or warp (set blade flat on workbench, look for rocking).
Blade direction arrow visible — for installing in correct rotation.
Install correctly (rotation matters)
Disconnect saw from power.
Remove arbor nut (left-handed thread on most circular saws — turn opposite of cutting rotation to loosen).
Install blade with rotation arrow pointing in the saw's cutting direction (toward the front of the saw on most circular saws).
Tighten arbor nut firmly — don't over-tighten (use the saw's spindle lock if equipped).
Verify blade spins freely with no scraping.
Test on scrap before final cut
First cut on scrap of the same material.
Inspect for: clean cut, no burning, no chipping, smooth motion.

Maintain blade life
Don't force the saw — let the blade do the work.
Forcing causes tooth chipping and overheating.
Clean pitch off blades periodically (Simple Green or pitch-cleaner solution).
Replace blade when teeth are visibly chipped or burned.
Store blades safely
Hang on pegboard or store in original case.
Don't stack blades on each other (chips teeth).
Keep dry to prevent rust on uncoated body.
Common mistakes that cost you
- Wrong blade for the material. Wood blade in metal = blade gone in seconds. Match blade to material.
- Too few teeth on visible cuts. Splintered, rough cut. Use 60-80T finish blade for visible cuts.
- Backwards blade installation. Cuts but inefficient and rough. Verify rotation arrow points forward.
- Forcing through cut. Burns blade and material. Steady pressure only.
- Cheap unbranded blades. Carbide tips fall off, blade warps. A quality blade lasts much longer.

What's the difference between rip and crosscut blades?
