How to Install Crown Moulding

Crown moulding is the trim that finishes the transition between wall and ceiling. Done right, it adds architectural detail that reads as expensive design. Done wrong, the corners gap, the joints don't align, and the whole room reads as awkward DIY work. The job is genuinely more skill-intensive than baseboards because the cuts are compound angles in three dimensions, and the moulding springs out from the corner at a precise angle.

Before you start

Three things to settle:

1. Spring angle determines cuts. Crown moulding sits at a 'spring angle' — the angle between the moulding's back face and the wall (typically 38° or 45°). The spring angle determines compound mitre saw settings for cuts. Get the spring angle wrong and the cuts don't fit. Most modern crown is 38° or 45° — verify before cutting.

2. Cope inside corners (almost always). Like baseboards, inside corners on crown should be coped, not mitred. Mitred inside corners gap as the house moves. Coping is harder on crown than baseboard because the profile is more complex, but it's still the right approach.

3. Hit framing, not just drywall. Crown is heavy and pulls down over years if not solidly anchored. Nails must hit ceiling joists or wall top plates, not just drywall. Plan nail locations during install.

What you'll need

Tools

  • Compound mitre saw (essential — single-bevel works, dual-bevel is easier)
  • Coping saw
  • Tape measure and pencil
  • Speed square and combination square
  • Stud finder
  • Brad nailer or finish nailer
  • Hammer and nail set
  • Caulking gun
  • Crown moulding stop blocks (small jigs that hold crown at correct angle on the saw)
  • Step ladder

Materials

  • Crown moulding (length + 15% waste)
  • 16-gauge or 18-gauge finish nails (sized to moulding thickness)
  • Wood filler
  • Painter's caulk
  • Primer and paint (or stain + topcoat)

Practice cuts on scraps

Crown cuts are compound angles. Saw settings depend on whether the cut is for an inside or outside corner, left or right side, plus the spring angle of the moulding. Even experienced trim carpenters double-check before each cut.

Practice on 2-foot scrap pieces until you can confidently set up cuts in both directions. Wasted scrap is far cheaper than wasted full-length moulding.

Step-by-step instructions

Find the spring angle

Measure or look up the spring angle of your specific crown profile. Most commonly 38° or 45° between the moulding's back face and wall.

Set your mitre saw's bevel and mitre angles per the published spring-angle settings (saw manual or online crown calculator).

Mark the install line on the wall

Crown sits at the top of the wall, leaning out toward the ceiling. Mark a horizontal line on the wall at the moulding's bottom edge — typically 4-6 inches below the ceiling depending on moulding height.

Use a level to extend the line around the entire room as install reference.

Find studs and joist framing

Sweep walls with stud finder, marking stud locations. Sweep the ceiling perpendicular to find joists.

Crown nails should hit at least one of: stud, top plate, or joist. The top plate of the wall is reliable for the crown's bottom edge; the ceiling joists are reliable for the top edge.

Cut and install the first piece (square ends)

First piece runs from inside corner to inside corner, with both ends cut square (no mitre, no cope). Length = full wall length minus jamb thicknesses if there's a doorway.

Hold against the wall at correct spring angle. Drive 16-gauge brads through the moulding into framing — top edge into joist, bottom edge into wall top plate. Three nails per 4-foot length minimum.

Cope the next piece's inside corner

On the next wall's piece, cut a 45-degree mitre on the end that meets the previous wall.

Use a coping saw to cut along the visible profile line on the mitred face — gradually, following the curve of the moulding profile.

Test fit. The coped end should sit cleanly against the face of the first piece. Adjust with sandpaper or coping saw until tight.

Continue around the room

Inside corners cope. Outside corners (rare in most rooms) get 45-degree mitres meeting at the corner.

Verify level along each piece's installation. Crown that lifts up at any point reads as a wave.

Splice long walls with scarf joints

Walls longer than your stock length (8 or 16 feet) need a scarf joint — overlapping 22.5° cuts that hide the seam.

Position the scarf at a stud location for solid nailing through both pieces.

Fill nail holes and caulk seams

Fill brad-nail holes with paintable wood filler.

Run a thin bead of paintable caulk along the top edge (where moulding meets ceiling) and bottom edge (where moulding meets wall). Caulk hides slight irregularities and produces a clean line.

Prime and paint

Pre-primed crown needs only topcoat. Raw wood needs primer first.

Two coats of trim-grade paint (semi-gloss or satin). Sand lightly between coats with 220-grit.

Inspect under raking light

Shine a light at low angle along the crown. Reveals any caulk gaps, raised nail holes, or visible seams that need touch-up.

Trim work looks finished when raking light shows no defects.

Common mistakes that cost you

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between traditional and modern crown?

Traditional crown: ornate profile (multiple curves, stepped edges), spring angle, requires compound cuts.

Modern flat crown: straight board attached at an angle (sometimes with a small bevel). Simpler cuts (just mitres at corners), no spring angle complexity.

Can I install crown without a compound mitre saw?

Difficult. Hand mitre boxes can do crown cuts but the precision is hard to achieve. A 10" or 12" compound mitre saw makes the job dramatically easier.

Daily rentals are available at most tool rental places. For a one-room project, rent rather than buy if you don't already have one.

How tall should crown moulding be?

Crown size scales to ceiling height. 8-foot ceilings: 3-4 inch crown (taller looks oversized). 9-foot ceilings: 4-6 inch. 10+ feet: 6-8 inch+.

Underscaling looks awkward; overscaling overwhelms a room.
