Before you start
Three things to settle:
1. Identify bulb type and trim. BR30 (bulged reflector, 30/8 inch wide): older standard. PAR30/PAR38 (parabolic aluminum reflector): brighter, narrower beam. LED retrofit kit: modern conversion, integrated trim + bulb + driver. Open trim: just the bulb visible. Baffle trim: ridged interior reduces glare. Reflector trim: shiny interior reflects more light.
2. Match colour temperature. Warm white (2700K): traditional, cozy. Cool white (3500K): more modern, neutral. Daylight (5000K): bright, blue-tinted. For most rooms, 2700-3000K. For kitchens and bathrooms, 3000-3500K. Mismatched colour temperature in adjacent fixtures looks wrong.
3. Dimmer compatibility. If on a dimmer: only LED bulbs marked 'dimmable' work properly. Non-dimmable LEDs flicker or buzz on dimmer circuits. Check bulb packaging and dimmer manufacturer's compatibility list.

Step-by-step instructions
Turn off power
At the wall switch.
Or breaker if you want extra safety (recessed lights are typically GFCI/AFCI on bathroom/kitchen circuits — if doing significant work, breaker off).
Wait for old bulb to cool
Recessed cans run hot — incandescent bulbs especially.
Wait 5-10 minutes after switch-off before grabbing.
Or use a cloth to grip a hot bulb.
Burns are common with recessed lights immediately after operation.
Identify how the bulb is held
Screw-in: most bulbs. Counterclockwise to remove.
Push-pin or twist-and-lock: less common, often older trims.
Retrofit kit: spring clips that grip the can interior.
Verify which type you're dealing with.
Remove existing bulb
Screw-in: turn counterclockwise. Should unscrew easily.
If stuck: gently rock side to side; sometimes corrosion holds.
Don't force — broken bulb in socket is hard to remove.
Set old bulb aside.
Inspect socket and trim
Look at socket: should be clean, contacts not corroded.
Trim: ring or baffle around the bulb. Should be intact.
If socket damaged: turn off breaker before testing further; may need professional.
Install new bulb
Screw-in: turn clockwise until firm but not over-tight.
Don't force; if hard to turn, check thread alignment.
Retrofit kit: connect to socket via medium-base adapter or twist-lock per kit instructions, then push retrofit unit into can — spring clips grip the can's interior.
Test the light
Turn switch on. Light should turn on immediately.
If on a dimmer: test at multiple settings, listen for buzz/flicker.
Verify colour temperature matches adjacent fixtures.
Adjust trim if needed
Trim should sit flush against ceiling.
If gapping: trim may need to be reseated or springs adjusted.
Verify clean look from below.
Dispose of old bulb properly
Incandescent: regular trash.
CFL: hazardous waste depot (contains mercury).
LED: regular trash.
Halogen: regular trash.
Consider full retrofit conversion
If many old incandescent recessed cans: convert all to LED retrofits during one session.

Common mistakes that cost you
- Touching hot bulb. Burn injury. Wait for bulb to cool.
- Wrong bulb type. BR30 in PAR30 socket = poor fit, won't lock. Match type.

- Mismatched colour temperatures. Adjacent fixtures look wrong. Match all to same Kelvin temperature.
- Not using retrofit when fixture would benefit. Old incandescent cans waste energy. Retrofit during any renovation.
Frequently asked questions
Can I put a different wattage bulb in?
Don't exceed the can's max wattage rating (printed on socket or trim).
Lower wattage: fine, just less light.
LED retrofits: equivalent wattage to incandescent (60W incandescent = 9W LED), so always lower actual wattage.
Why does my new LED flicker?
Most common: not on dimmable LED with dimmer circuit. Verify dimmable.
Or: bad LED driver, neutral wire issue, dimmer not LED-compatible.
Replace dimmer if old: Lutron Diva or Caseta works with most LEDs.
How do I know if my recessed cans are IC-rated?
Look at the can interior: stamped 'IC' or 'IC-AT'.
Older cans (pre-2000): often non-IC, can't be in direct contact with insulation.
