Power off at the breaker, not just the thermostat

Step-by-step instructions
Photograph the existing wiring
Pull the existing thermostat off the wall plate (slide up, pull straight out from the wall, or unscrew depending on the model).
Take 2-3 clear photos showing every wire and which terminal it connects to. Photos are your insurance against mistakes.
Turn off the furnace breaker
At the main electrical panel, switch off the breaker labelled 'furnace' or 'HVAC.'
Verify by setting the thermostat to call for heat — the furnace should not start. If it does, you've turned off the wrong breaker.
Label each wire
Disconnect each wire one at a time and place a small piece of masking tape on the wire end with the terminal letter (R, W, Y, G, C, etc.) written on it.
Don't trust wire colour alone — older systems sometimes use non-standard colours.
Remove the old wall plate
Most wall plates screw to the wall with 2-4 screws. Unscrew and remove.
Behind the plate, you'll see the wires coming through a small hole in the wall.
Install the new wall plate
Pull the wires through the new wall plate's wire hole.
Mark the screw locations on the wall using the new plate as a template. Drill pilot holes (anchors needed if not into a stud).
Mount the wall plate, leaving wires accessible for connection.
Connect wires to the new thermostat
Loosen each terminal screw on the new thermostat. Insert each labelled wire into its corresponding terminal (R to R, W to W, etc.).
Tighten each terminal screw. Tug each wire gently to confirm secure connection.
