How to Replace a Water Shutoff Valve

Plumbing swaps go wrong when people rush the shut-off and torque step. Take an extra two minutes shutting things down properly and you eliminate 80% of the failures we get called to fix.

Water shutoff valves under sinks, behind toilets, and at appliances are the line of defense against water damage. When they seize (won't turn) or leak (drip from the handle), they need replacement before the next emergency. The job involves shutting off water at the main, replacing the valve, and pressure-testing — generally Advanced DIY because of the consequences if a leak develops behind a wall.

This guide covers replacing a 1/4-turn ball valve at a typical fixture. Compression valves and ball valves both follow similar replacement principles.

Before you start

Three things to settle:

1. Shut off water at the main. Before working on any individual shutoff valve, turn off the main water supply. The fixture's shutoff is what you're replacing — you can't rely on it being closed during the work.

2. Match valve type and size. Common types: compression valves (older), 1/4-turn ball valves (modern). Common sizes: 1/2 inch (most fixtures), 3/8 inch (some toilet supplies). Match the new valve to the existing connection types.

3. Compression vs sweat fittings. Compression: nut and ferrule slide onto pipe; tightening compresses the ferrule for seal. No soldering required. Sweat (soldered): copper pipe with valve soldered in place. Requires solder skills. Most modern installations use compression for ease.

What you'll need

Tools

  • Adjustable wrench
  • Slip-joint pliers
  • Pipe cutter (for copper pipe modifications)
  • Bucket and old towels
  • Plumber's tape (Teflon)
  • Wire brush
  • Sandpaper or emery cloth (for prepping pipe)

Materials

  • Replacement shutoff valve (matching size and connection type)
  • Compression nuts and ferrules (if not included)
  • Plumber's tape
  • Pipe joint compound (alternative to Teflon tape)

Test new valve before walking away

After installing the new valve, slowly restore water and watch for leaks. A small drip becomes a flood within hours.

Turn the valve on and off several times. Verify it operates smoothly with no leaks at any position. Then run the fixture downstream to confirm flow is normal.

Step-by-step instructions

Shut off water at the main

Close the main shutoff valve at the home's water entry point. Run a downstream faucet to verify water is off and to drain residual pressure.

Remove the existing valve

Place a bucket under the valve to catch residual water.

For compression valves: loosen the compression nut connecting the valve to the supply pipe. The valve slides off.

For sweat-fit valves: more involved — heat the joint with a torch to release solder, OR cut the pipe and re-solder a new valve.

Inspect and clean the pipe

Look at the pipe end where the new valve will connect. Remove old ferrules or solder.

Lightly sand the pipe surface with emery cloth to remove oxidation. Clean copper or brass surface helps the new fitting seal.

Install the new compression valve

Slide the compression nut onto the pipe, threaded end facing the valve.

Slide the ferrule (small brass ring) onto the pipe behind the nut.

Push the valve onto the pipe end. The ferrule sits against the valve's compression seat.

Hand-thread the compression nut onto the valve.

Tighten the compression nut

Hand-tight first. Then with a wrench, turn another 1/4 to 1/2 turn until firm.

Don't over-tighten — strips the threads or distorts the ferrule. The compression occurs at moderate torque; excessive force damages.

Connect supply line to new valve

Connect the fixture's supply line (toilet flex hose, sink supply, etc.) to the new valve's outlet.

Apply Teflon tape if compression fitting. Hand-tight plus a quarter turn with wrench.

Restore water and test

Open the main valve slowly. Watch the new valve for leaks.

Open and close the new valve several times. Verify smooth operation.

Open the downstream fixture (toilet, faucet) — should flow normally.

Inspect for 24 hours

Place a paper towel under the new valve. Check after 24 hours.

Damp paper towel = slow leak. Tighten compression nut another quarter turn.

Dry paper towel = solid install.

Common mistakes that cost you

Frequently asked questions

Quarter-turn ball valve or compression valve?

Quarter-turn ball valves: faster operation (90 degrees), more reliable long-term, more expensive.

Compression valves: cheaper, more common in older homes, slightly less reliable.

For new replacements, quarter-turn ball valves are preferred.

Why is my old valve seized?

Mineral buildup, corrosion, or lack of use. Unused valves seize over years.

Once seized, replacement is the typical fix. Seized valves can't be relied on for emergency shutoff.

Do I need a permit?

Single-fixture valve replacement: typically no permit. Major plumbing changes (running new lines, adding new fixtures): plumbing permit required.
