Modern Canadian framing puts studs every 16 inches on centre. If you find one stud, the next is 16 inches away in either direction. The ones beyond are 32, 48, 64, etc. inches.

Step-by-step instructions
Prep batteries and check
Replace batteries before any important install. Weak batteries cause false positives and missed studs.
Power on the tool and verify the display shows full battery.
Calibrate on bare wall
Move to a wall section with no studs — typically the centre of a wall span between studs.
Hold the tool flat against the wall. Press the calibration button (or the main button on simpler tools).

Sweep horizontally across the wall
Hold the tool flat against the wall, fingers on the press-and-hold button.

Move past the stud (the indicator turns off) and continue. Each stud encountered triggers the indicator.
Mark stud edges, not centre
Most stud finders detect stud edges (where wood begins/ends). Mark each edge with a pencil dot.
The stud's centre is between the two edges (typically 1.5 inches wide for modern 2x4 framing). For most installs, anchor at the centre — drive your screw at the midpoint between the two marks.
Verify with a backup method
Stud finders can be fooled by metal plumbing strapping, electrical wires, or unusual framing. Verify suspected stud locations:
- Drill a small 1/16 inch test hole at the marked stud: bit drag with light tan dust = wood. Sudden through-hole = empty. The pinhole disappears with paint touch-up.
- Look for nail pops or visible fasteners: drywall screws and nails sit on stud lines. Sometimes visible as small bumps in raking light.
- Tap the wall: studs sound duller than empty cavities. With practice, you can tap-locate studs reliably.

Once you find one stud, sweep further in both directions to find adjacent studs. Verify spacing — typically 16 inches on centre.
Knowing the spacing pattern lets you predict stud locations across the entire wall without re-scanning each spot.
Mark studs with painter's tape for visibility
If you'll be installing hardware over the marked studs, lay painter's tape vertically extending well above and below the install zone with the tape covering the stud's centre.
The tape stays visible during install; pencil marks can get covered or rubbed off.
Account for plaster walls
Older Ottawa homes often have plaster on wood lath instead of modern drywall. Plaster contains metal mesh in some installations, which confuses cheap stud finders.
For plaster walls, use a deep-scan stud finder rated for plaster (Zircon HD55) OR rely on physical verification — small drill holes — exclusively.
