Table saws are the most-versatile workshop tool — fast, accurate cuts in all directions on most materials. They're also the most dangerous tool in residential workshops, responsible for tens of thousands of injuries annually in North America. Most injuries come from kickback (material thrown back at the operator) or hand contact with the blade. Both are preventable with proper technique and modern safety features (riving knife, blade guard, anti-kickback pawls).
This guide covers safe table saw use for residential ripping and crosscutting. SawStop and other premium saws have additional safety features but require the same fundamental technique.
Before you start
Three things to settle:
1. Riving knife and guard installed. The riving knife (small splitter that follows the blade) and blade guard prevent kickback and hand contact. Don't remove them. Some specialty cuts (dado, non-through cuts) require removal — re-install before standard cuts.
2. Use push sticks and push blocks. Never push material through with bare hands when within 6 inches of the blade. Use push sticks (long pushers with notched ends) or push blocks (wider for sheet goods). Hands stay far from the blade.
3. Stand to the side of the cut. Don't stand directly behind the cut. Kickback throws material back at the operator at high speed; standing to the side keeps you out of the trajectory.

- Table saw with riving knife and blade guard installed
- Push sticks and push blocks
- Tape measure and pencil
- Outfeed support (sawhorses or commercial outfeed table)
- Featherboard (helps maintain consistent pressure for safety)
- Safety glasses, ear protection, dust mask
Materials
- Carbide-tip rip blade or combo blade matched to material
Anti-kickback pawls and riving knife are non-optional
Modern table saws ship with riving knives and anti-kickback pawls (small spring-loaded teeth that prevent material moving backward). Some operators remove these because they 'get in the way' — never do this.
These features are the difference between a near-miss and a serious injury. Re-install after any specialty cut that requires temporary removal.
Step-by-step instructions
Set up the saw
Verify the riving knife is installed and aligned with the blade. Verify the blade guard is in place.
Adjust blade height so the gullets (spaces between teeth) are just above the material. Higher exposes more blade unnecessarily; lower causes burning and binding.
Set the rip fence
For ripping (cutting along the grain), set the fence to the desired width using the saw's measurement scale.
Verify accuracy by measuring the distance from the blade to the fence with a tape measure (don't trust the scale alone).
Position outfeed support
Long pieces (over 4 feet) need outfeed support to prevent dropping off the back of the saw. Use sawhorses or a commercial outfeed table.
Without outfeed support, the back of the cut sags, the material binds against the blade, and kickback can occur.
Stand to the side, not behind
Position your body to the side of the blade's projected path of kickback. If material is kicked back, it travels along the blade's plane — stand outside that line.
Most table saw injuries happen to operators standing directly behind the cut.
Power on and feed material
Power on the saw. Wait for the blade to reach full speed.
Place material against the rip fence with the cut-edge facing the blade. Push forward steadily.
Once material is past the front of the blade and engaging fully, transfer hands to push sticks for the final 6-12 inches.
Use push sticks for the final approach
When your hand would otherwise pass within 6 inches of the blade, switch to a push stick.
Hold the material against the fence with one push stick; advance with another (or use a single combination push stick).
Keep pushing until the material is fully past the blade.
Continue past the blade and clear the cut
Push material fully past the blade until the back end clears the riving knife.
Don't stop with material still on the blade — material can pivot and bind.
Once clear, release the cut-off and the kept piece. Power off the saw.
For crosscutting: use a mitre gauge or sled
Crosscutting (cutting across the grain, perpendicular to the wood length) requires a mitre gauge or crosscut sled — never use the rip fence alone for crosscuts.
The mitre gauge holds the material square to the blade; the rip fence acts as a length stop only when used with a stop block (not the fence pressing on the cut piece).
Power off before adjusting anything
Never reach over a spinning blade. Power off, wait for the blade to stop completely, then make adjustments.
Many injuries happen during 'quick adjustments' with the saw running.
Common mistakes that cost you
- Removing riving knife or guard. Modern safety features prevent injuries. Re-install after specialty cuts.
- Standing behind the cut. Kickback path. Stand to the side.
- Not using push sticks. Hands within 6 inches of blade is the leading cause of cuts. Always use push sticks for the final approach.
- Crosscutting against the rip fence. Material pivots and kicks back. Use mitre gauge or sled for crosscuts.
- Long pieces without outfeed support. Sag causes binding. Always support material at the outfeed.
- Reaching over the blade while running. Power off before adjustments. No exceptions.
Frequently asked questions
Should I get a SawStop?
SawStop saws have a flesh-detection mechanism that brakes the blade when contact with skin is detected — turns serious injuries into minor cuts. They cost 2-3x more than standard saws.
For frequent users (professionals, serious hobbyists), the safety premium is worth it. For occasional residential DIY, standard saws with proper technique are acceptable.
What's the difference between rip and crosscut?
Rip: cut along the grain (length of the board). Use the rip fence to set width.
Crosscut: cut across the grain (width of the board). Use a mitre gauge or crosscut sled.
Why does my cut burn?
Three causes: dull blade, blade height too low (only the tips are cutting), or feeding too slowly (heat builds in the cut).
Replace blade if dull. Set blade height to gullets above material. Feed at consistent steady pace.
